As there are 2 spare pairs in the avergae cat5 cable, would it be possible
to use these to run 2 separate ethernet signals over 1 cable? I use a spare pair in a cable now for a phone line which seems to work well. I ask becuase I need to run 2 cables over a reasonable distance and 2 cables would look a mess (can't hide them that well as its rented accommodation). If this is possible, are there any adaptors available to make this a painless process or is it a case of just fitting 2 rj45 conectors to each end with the correct pairs wired up? Why? I don't see the logic to this. AFAIK the fact that 100mbps ethernet runs over cat5 and not cat3 is due to the quality and number of twists in the pairs not the number of unused ones. Rob |

They could be an issue if your install is right onthe edge of working, since the 2nd ethernet would be much closer than 2 cables in parallel - given the way Cat5 compliance is designed for worst case interference, drivers, cable degradation and so on, it is v. unlikely to happen in practice. And if the worst happens, put a switch at the remote end - a cheap 4 port 10/100 switch would give you 3 connections sharing a single 100 Mbps link. > > -- > -Geoff -- Regards Stephen Hope - return address needs fewer xxs |

I got so preoccupied with the novel idea of using 1 cable, it didn't actually occur to me that I could just buy a cheap ebuyer switch (less than £10) and put that on one end of the cable and run 2 PC's from that.... Much easier I suspect, and also cheaper bizarrely! Rob |
