Default Win XP and Win 98 Help Please

Hello - I am running XP on one machine 98 on the other. I go from wall to
broadband modem to hub. Out of XP machine to hub. 2nd 98 machine goes to
hub. Both machines can use internet but there is no file sharing
whatsoever. I have set all macines up to file and print share as per
instructions from MS website but this is not happening. I am running
zonealarm on both machines but this does not seem to interfere in anyway.
Also ruinning Norton, has anyone had problems with Norton on a small
network?? I am reluctant to remove Norton for obvious reasons. Any help
please would be great. Thanks :-)

Renee

Are you sure? Have you tried uninstalling ZA from both to check if
this is the thing stopping the machines communicating?

It will unless you enable the local IP address range.....try turning ZA off
on both machines & if it works then that's your answer.

NAV should be fine....

Don't expect great things for file sharing between XP & 98/ME - I struggled
with this for months - it works but the transfer rates are erratic &
generally poor. As soon as I upgraded the ME machine to XP all was fixed. I
read something somewhere about there being a fundamental flaw in the 98/ME
IP stack - don't know if that was the issue but the only thing that cured
the problem was an upgrade to XP.

I.

ME is generally regarded as a FPOS.
I have XP, 98SE and 95 machines networked, part wired, part wireless,
never had a problem with file transfers.
Used to have 3.11 m/cs as well, no problems. (3.11 were taken out of
use long before the XP machines were added so I don't know if that
works.)
