Hi,
I plan to buy a Netgear DM602 ADSL Modem & a Belkin Wireless DSL/Router. Plan is as follows:- 1. Connect Netgear DM602 to Demon DSL line 2. Connect Netgear DM602 to Belkin F5D7230uk4 Wireless Router 3. Direct connect Belkin Wireless Router to Desktop PCI card 4. Connect wirelessly to Belkin Router with existing laptop wireless PCMCIA card My Plan of attack is to configure the DM602 to link into Demon on an express solo setup. Once that is working I hope I can reconnect as above and with the wonders of Belkin's auto detect wizzard - hope it somehow glues my system together... In a similar way I hope I win this week's christmas lottery, yet somthing tells me it wont be so simple. I am particularly off-put by the word "router" on the Netgear DM602 box, which suggests I am connecting a router to router - No (??) Any ideas (or suggested lottery numbers) would be very welcome Happy Christmas ! PS. Have you noticed the masses of returned Network / ADSL boxes in PC World. Looks like lots of us will be taking things back on Boxing Day. Sandra & Andrew andrew@sandrew.demon.co.uk |

I am concerned however, that I may be attaching a wireless router to an ADSL modem router - will this work ? I am heading this way as I want to allow my laptop to access the wireless router + modem router without having to turn on my desktop PC. (that is what I am not going for 100% external gear) - Has anyone else succeeded in doing this ? |

You can get 'all in one' Wireless Access Point/4 port Wired Router/ADSL Modem. Belkin (7630) do one of these now too - there *are* others out there. A mate of mine has just bought the Netgear DG834G which works well and he had no problem installing it. He connects the unit to his phone line for ADSL and via one of the four ethernet sockets to his desktop PC. His daughters laptop then connects wirelessly via a PCMCIA wireless lan card to the netgear unit. They can then surf the 'net net without problem and transfer files between PC's etc. If you leave the Netgear unit on it makes no difference if the desktop is on or not, the Netgear dials up the ADSL connection on demand for you. I suggest you do some research on the various websites and download the various manuals in Acrobat so you know what you are buying before you make your decision. (I have a Netgear wirelss Router WGR614 which connects via ethernet to my broadband cable modem and connects to the PC downstairs wirelessly - it all works well). If you're trying to save money www.ebuyer.co.uk sell some none branded equipment very cheaply that does the job quite well. Don't forget 802.11b is fast enough for surfing, you only need the faster standard for file transfer or faster tasks..... I wouldn't proclaim to be an expert but what I have bought all works and works well, I hope that helps. Patrick Worcs |

All of the above solutions have inbuilt support for 802.11g/54G wireless, though if its only for sharing an internet connection, equipment based on the older/slower 802.11b standard should suit you as well. > PS. Have you noticed the masses of returned Network / ADSL boxes in PC > World. Looks like lots of us will be taking things back on Boxing Day. Yes, I think it comes down to my comment about if something contains an ADSL modems (or not) - those versions sold as "broadband routers" tend not to (they work fine with cable modems etc), while those sold as "ADSL modems/routers" do. However, if someone sees the words "broadband router" and has just got an ADSL line... ! Regards Sunil |

It think the 'D-Link DSL 604+' suggested has Wireless facilities built-in, so you're ok on that point. The Netgear DG834G appears similar. Alternatively, if you go the way of separate boxes, instead of a wireless router you could use a Wireless Access Point and a separate hub, losing the router function which you'd have in the Netgear unit. It's a bit messy though, and having a quick look around I couldn't see any WAP/hub units as opposed to WAP/routers. |

Its a 4 port router with a built in ADSL modem and wireless networking. It is how I connect. Desktop wired to router and laptop using Wireless PCMCIA card. -- Conor "Cogito Eggo Sum" - "I think, therefore I am a waffle" |

Ah, it's like the tech support "keep rapidly power cycling the PSU until the problem is resolved". The rule with anything is K-I-S-S, and it most definately applies with mixing networking kit. Fewer boxes might actually save enough to get closer to 54Mbps network (altho that would be gross overkill & unnecessary for basic internet use - more useful for file transfers re size). If you need the Internet for anything important, keep a backup pay-as-you-go modem option available since Broadband does occasionally go down and your equipment can fail. Fewer boxes reduces the probability of failure, and Netgear equipment is quite reasonable in price/reliability. -- Dorothy Bradbury www.stores.ebay.co.uk/panaflofan for fans, books & other items http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dorothy...ry/panaflo.htm (Direct) |
