Default No external internat connection at all using XP

I am trying to resolve an issue on a 2 station TCP/IP LAN network.

The XP machine on the network cannot get any internet data transfer at
all.

The dial-up connection works without issue, but it is as if a brick wall
has been placed between the PC and the internet.

The PC can't connect to the internet, email, MSN Messenger, I can't ping
any IP addresses nor TRACERT anywhere.

Aside from the fact that the PC dials into the ISP successfully, it is
as if the PC isn't connected to the net.

No firewalls are installed (inc XP's built in) all AV software has been
turned off (for testing it isn't the cause)

The machine did suffer (AIUI) an infection of the Blaster worm, but this
was 'cleaned' and no recognised symptoms are reoccurring.

The 2nd machine, a win98 box, and the XP box can happily communicate
across the LAN, but of course, the 2nd box also cannot get any external
access.

I have tried re-creating a DUN connection, but that didn't seem to work.
I cannot uninstall TCP/IP in XP (at least the box to do so is greyed)

There are several errors in Event Viewer which concern IPNATHLP, stating
firstly the DNS proxy agent encountered an error obtaining the local
list servers. Some DNS or WINS servers may be inaccessible to clients on
the local network

There are also errors stating the DHCP allocator was unable to bind the
IP address 192.168.0.1, indicating an error with TCP/IP

Another frequent error is IPSEC services, stating it it could not be
loaded or initialised.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?
It's as if a complete barrier has been put up.

Hi, could you confirm this is your setup?

Dialup--(ser/rj-11?)--XP--eth--crossover--eth--W98?

I'm having a similar problem, except it's internet connection sharing that
isn't working. Did you recently delete spy/adware from the XP box. Try
this...

Default Mcafee was the culprit! (was Re: No external internat connection at all using XP)

Nope.

The PC had been infected with the Blaster worm, which was subsequently
cleaned using Symantec's 'cleaner' off their web site.

There was no data getting through at all via any program that required
internet access, although we could connect.

It was if a firewall was in place blocking absolutely everything.

I read 'somewhere' about an issue with Mcafee V7.
So i uninstalled it.

I can now get full internet access without any issue at all.
Clearly, Mcafee was in some way connected, but i do not know what.
I haven't re-installed it, opting for Grisfot's AVG for the time being.

FWIW, the firewall option within Mcafee was *not* installed when it was
set-up.
