I have a small home network running windows 2000 server and a client using XP Pro. I have a Linksys router dealing with DHCP allocation and connect to the internet through a DLink ADSL Modem. Today, I have found that although I can ping all relevant hardware and my ISP (who confirm that I am logged on), I cannot access email eternally or use the internet. The only thing I did with the server yesterday was install remote/routing in preparation for establishing a VPN, which I have still to do. Does this sound like it could be the problem or is it some sort of DNS thing, or is it something else entirely. Incidentally, I have used ipconfig released/renewed/flushedDNS and registerDNS to try and sort things out with no success..... Any help appreciated... Derek |

It will be something in the router service you installed on 2k, disable all the rules and you things should work again. On the other hand, if your machines are using the linksys router as the default gateway and not the 2k server then this kind of rules out what i just said. Can you confirm how your routing is setup. -- Nathan D Higgins Website: http://nathan.link9.net/ Email: nathan[at]link9[dot]net Hosting: http://www.link9.net WAP: http://wap.link9.net [dot]NET: nathan[at]link9[dot]net |

I have the router connected to the adsl modem through its wan port. The server and client PC's are connected to serparate ports on the router. I have been using this system for about a month with no problems. I have tried connecting direct to each pc in turn and resetting the modem but no luck. I'm considering using my backup ghost image on the server to see what that does.. You could illiminate the problem being the 2k server by unplugging it from the router. If things still fail then it's a problem with your router or internet connection. Try plugging the adsl modem directly into a PC, if that works its definetly your router. Life would be easier if you could use your 2k machine for routing but thats just my opinion )-- Nathan D Higgins Website: http://nathan.link9.net/ Email: nathan[at]link9[dot]net Hosting: http://www.link9.net WAP: http://wap.link9.net [dot]NET: nathan[at]link9[dot]net |

Since my earlier post (on my Sister's PC as "Julie") I have reverted to a saved ghost image on the server to no effect. I have tried bypassing the router but they still wouldn't work. Currently, I'm using an old modem on my XP machine....# Derek "Nathan Higgins" <(E-Mail Removed)-spam> wrote in message news:RvUQa.12794$(E-Mail Removed)... > You could illiminate the problem being the 2k server by unplugging it from > the router. I think I have eliminated the router and the win2000 machine. I installed the adsl modem direct into the XP machine and it still doesn't work after changing the settings. I think it could be the DNS server somewhere. I get an IP address for the dns server of 81.27.64.22 which I can't ping whether through this old modem I've reverted to or the ADSL one I normally use. Using this old modem I get the former DNS IP along with one of 4.2.2.1 which I can. Does anybody know what the 81.etc IP address is all about? Still confused... Finally up and running again. I suspect it was something to do with my ISP although they claim they've had no problems..... Thanks for the help..
