MN-720 updates --now low signal & lost connections

I updated the MN-270 wireless router this weekend. Since
then. . the signal is very low and if i leave the PC
idle ..when i come back there is no connection and i have
to reboot.

Ideas. Suggestions?

Yes. Roll back the driver to the previous version and try again. Let us
know. There are reported problems with the new driver for the MN 720.

Also, you might want to read some past threads on this same subject. If
you're not using a newsreader (Outlook Express), go to Google Groups and do
a search.

If you don't know how to roll back the driver, post back.

I take it you are running Windows XP with either no SP (a very bad idea)
or you just have SP1 installed. The new driver is supposed to work
better with SP2. AS was suggested I recommend rolling back the driver
until after you install SP2.

Caveat here......

Waiting for SP-2 is not going to help those people running Win98, SE, ME, or
Win2000. My opinion (and it's just that) is that SP-2 for XP is not going
to make a difference. I hope I'm wrong since I'm running XP on both of my
machines.

I too would be surprised if the new driver worked "better" only with SP2

The driver model is essentially the same.

No you have to write a different driver for each version of Windows.
That is part of how it was designed. You can put multiple drivers into
one file to simplify the process over the different versions of Windows.

So far I have only heard of that particular problem occurring on Windows
XP, while I haven't heard of it happening for the regular version of
Windows.

Your roll back comment only applies to Windows XP as that was a new
feature of Windows XP (to try to emulate this with prior versions of
windows didn't always work). You are criticizing me because I'm
assuming he is running Windows XP as well as you.

How can you do that?

Why don't you realize that?

I guess you are tired or have allowed yourself to be upset be someone or
something.

Also I have not heard of any problems with the new drivers on any OS
other then Windows XP without any Service Pack or Windows XP SP1. That
is where I came to that assumption. The original poster didn't say
which OS so based on what was said both you & I assumed that "RebJam" is
using XP.

RE: Your comment about not hearing of any problems with the new drivers on
any OS other than XP..... There has been a reported signal loss in this
group with the new driver by someone who is using Win98 and I'm sure there
will be more. Perhaps you missed the post. (Look for post from "Jay" on
Aug 1st and my reply.)
And by the way, I can only comment on the driver for the MN 720. I have no
knowledge of other drivers
that may or may not have a problem.

As for the roll back comment, if roll back only works reliably with Windows
XP then I guess the driver will have to be removed and replaced by other
means. That should not be a problem unless someone is running Win2000 and
has their drive formatted to NTFS. Then it becomes a matter of using the
recovery console to remove the driver and replace with the older version.

criticizing you? I certainly appreciate the help you give in this forum and
I'm sure others do too. But you do need to realize that Microsoft is not
infallible. If they have published a driver which is not working right,
they need to know about it. I might be all wet over this driver issue and
you might be correct that SP-2 will resolve it. You notice in my previous
post I clearly stated that it is "my opinion" that SP-2 won't make a
difference. I stand by that, but I guess we shall see.

Also, I'm not upset about the driver problem at all. The resolution was
simple. Replace with older driver and get back my signal quality. Others
who are having the same problem should be advised to do the same thing. If
MS chooses not to further update the driver for the MN 720, I fully
understand.

The problem with uninstalling the driver is on Windows 2000 & Windows ME
because of System File Protection. Driver files are considered
interesting files and thus to take it back to an older version is really
difficult. To roll back the Driver on Windows ME you need to restart in
MS-DOS with a boot disk then rename the files & extract the older version.

As I mentioned only Windows XP has a rollback feature. To try & get the
closest thing would take several hours of looking through thousands of
files in the c:\windows\inf folder on the Windows 9X kernel & I don't
even know where to start doing that on Windows 2000 other then a FFR.

I guess I missed the post by jay though. I personally will never get a
laptop wireless adapter as they always seem to have worse reception then
the USB models. This means I will never have a MN-520 or MN-720 or any
use of either.

I'm sorry about being so rude. I had just been woken up 2 hours earlier
then I would normally get up by an old roommate that was having problems
controlling her emotions. Way to emotional and I think it may have come
off on what I said.

It's getting late and I've been running back and forth to the office to see
if a backup is completed. Got a hard drive that looks like it's going
south.... You know what that can mean.

You're correct about Win2000 Pro and ME. System file protection will
definitely block replacing the driver while the OS is up and running.
Booting to DOS is of course a solution with ME; Win2000 is another matter
especially if using NTFS.

Hey, no problem about the post. After all the years hanging out in FIDO,
