Can someone email me and tell me if the base station
needs to be permanently connected to a computer, or if I
just have a laptop, can I just disconnect it from the
base station and turn on it's wireless function once
setup of the base station is complete?

The PC connected to my basestation is usually off, and
three other wireless devices (a PC, a notebook, and a
TiVo) all function perfectly, including full internet
access. So, I'd have to say the answer to your question
is YES
