I have the Xbox wireless adapter (MN-740) that I've used
to connect to my Linksys Router (Wireless G Broadband Router WRT54G) for play on Xbox Live. Everything worked perfectly for a few months but I had to enable the broadcast of the SSID for the Xbox adapter to see my wireless network. I saw that the latest firmware upgrade for the Xbox adapter allows it to connect to "hidden" SSIDs. After I updated the firmware, the Xbox adapter can now connect to my router w/ a hidden SSID, but now the Xbox adapter can't connect to Xbox Live! The ONLY thing I changed on my router was turning off the broadcast SSID. The ONLY change I made to the Xbox adapter was the firmware. I don't think this router is on Microsoft's "officially" supported routers, but it worked fine before the upgrade. Can someone please help me? Rich Moore Rich Moore |

And it works if you turned the SSID broadcast back on, Rich? Before you do
that, unplug the MN-740 for a minute or so, then plug it back in again. -- Chris H. No. When I couldn't connect to Xbox Live I re-enabled
broadcast ssid on the router, unplugged my Xbox adapter for 30 seconds, then tried again and it didn't work. I even changed the ssid (leaving broadcast on) and unplugged everything and tried again (I wanted to make sure it was trying to connect to the router using the new settings). If it was just a matter of re-enabling broadcast, that's not a big deal - but I can't play on Live at all. >-----Original Message----- >And it works if you turned the SSID broadcast back on, Rich? If you are NOT using WPA encryption (the MN-740 only does WEP), then I would
go into the connection configuration on the Xbox and double-check your settings. It sounds like you may have the Gateway incorrectly entered. I'm not using any encryption on either end (not WEP or
WPA) and I wasn't using any before the firmware upgrade. I read through the instructions very carefully on the URL that you sent me and I've followed them to a tee. (I also didn't see anything about settings for the Gateway) If I run the Xbox Live troubleshooter, it succeeds all the way up to the last step where it fails connecting to Xbox Live. It lists 3 items: 1 - See if your router is on the "official" list 2 - Make sure the MTU setting on the router is 1356 (I think) or higher. Mine is using the default which is 1500. 3 - I can't remember what this item was but it didn't provide anything helpful. (I can try it again when I get home tonight so I can tell you exactly what this item was) As I said in my original post, I didn't change any router settings (like the MTU, encryption etc.) except for the broadcast ssid. Any ideas? Thanks for trying to help me out. >-----Original Message----- >If you are NOT using WPA encryption (the MN-740 only does WEP), then I would >go into the connection configuration on the Xbox and double-check your >settings. You've pretty much touched all the bases, Rich. The other thing is to
unplug the MN-740 a little bit (like the minute I mentioned) and then see how it registers with the base station. It should pop up just like another networking device and be recognized. Probably not, but I need to ask - your Xbox isn't modded in any fashion, is it? That would block your access I believe. Thought not. And you're not using AOL as your Internet Service Provider, are you? Here's one thing from the URL I listed previously to make very sure of: ===== From the Wireless Settings screen, select Network Mode as Infrastructure. Select Security Type and configure the Xbox Compatible wireless bridge with the same security settings (NONE, 64-bit WEP, or 128-bit WEP) as your wireless router. ===== -- Chris H. D'oh! It turns out it was a case of user error. (My
Xbox isn't modded by the way) I tried connecting my Xbox directly to my router to rule out the wireless adapter. When I tried to connect to XBL, it failed. I couldn't imagine what was wrong. I remembered that I had to punch holes in my firewall for the ports that Xbox Live needed. I looked at the ports and they were still listed and it showed the IP address that it used. I ran over to my Xbox and sure enough, my IP address had changed. I had the IP address on my Xbox set to dynamic and the router must have given my Xbox a new IP address. I entered a static IP address for the Xbox and put it in the port forwarding setup on my router and it worked just dandy. Thanks for your help. Sometimes you just have to think things through carefully. ![]() Rich >-----Original Message----- >You've pretty much touched all the bases, Rich.
