I just bought the MN -610 and I am trying to find out if it supports the
H.323 protocol . I want to enable net meeting and I am having trouble with port forwarding allowing connection. I'm set up as a router not a bridge. JP |

Quoting a previous post (one of several) in this newsgroup on the same
subject from Microsoft MVP Brian Sullivan: ===== The MN 100, MN 500 and MN 700 do not have a built in H.323 proxy ( as some other routers do ) and thus will not support directly two way NetMeeting audio/video out of the box( I assume this is what you mean by being Netmeeting "compliant"). Use of the dmz feature will allow one station to have full audio/video function ( and also allow the dmz client to field incoming calls made directly to the wan IP of the router). Use of the dmz feature should be accompanied with use of a (configured for NetMeeitng use) software firewall on dmz machine. -- Brian Sullivan Meeting by Wire ( http://www.meetingbywire.com) ------------ Is your PC protected? -- http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp ===== -- Chris H. Port forwarding is generally not a solution to H.323/NetMeeting function in the MN1/5/700. It might be possible to configure but I don't know any one that has a functioning system using individual or port range forwarding ( I think to work it would have to be a port triggered setup). Generally use of the dmz is the only strategy that works (allowing one station outbound two way audio/video call capability and inbound call capability -- when the wan IP is called directly). -- Brian Sullivan Meeting by Wire ( http://www.meetingbywire.com) ------------ Is your PC protected? -- http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp |

And to the victor belong the spoils.
Thanks to both of you. One (pardon me,) two of the timeliest responses I've ever had on a newsgroup. I suspected DMZing was the way to go and I haven't tried that yet either but I had to put the H.323 issue to rest first. So now I guess all the safeguards that I had in place before I started using routers will have to be reinstated. Sigh. jim "Chris H." <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:%(E-Mail Removed)... > Beat ya! > -- > Chris H. > Microsoft Windows MVP > Associate Expert > Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone > > "Brian Sullivan MVP" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message > news:%(E-Mail Removed)... > > JP wrote: > >> I just bought the MN -610 and I am trying to find out if it supports > >> the H.323 protocol . > > > > If by support you mean a built in H.323 proxy like Linksys and other > > routers -- no Microsoft routers do not have H.323 support. > > > > > >> I want to enable net meeting and I am having trouble with port > >> forwarding allowing connection. > >> I'm set up as a router not a bridge. > > > > Port forwarding is generally not a solution to H.323/NetMeeting function > > in > > the MN1/5/700. 8-) Brian has the correct answers on that issue, so I searched out one of

And modest to boot ! : - )
This is the first time I've been to this group. I found it through an MS page where I was searching for an answer. I did try to muddle through the previous posts to find the info but unsuccessfully. I wish Outlook would do a word search on the messages that I haven't opened yet. Anyways . . . thanks again to both of you. jim "Chris H." <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:%(E-Mail Removed)... > 8-) Brian has the correct answers on that issue, so I searched out one of > his previous posts. > -- > Chris H. > Microsoft Windows MVP > Associate Expert > Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone > > "JP" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message > news ey1c.129206$Hy3.26918@edtnps89...> > And to the victor belong the spoils. > > > > Thanks to both of you. > > One (pardon me,) two of the timeliest responses I've ever had on a > > newsgroup. > > > > I suspected DMZing was the way to go and I haven't tried that yet either > > but > > I had to put the H.323 issue to rest first. > > So now I guess all the safeguards that I had in place before I started > > using > > routers will have to be reinstated. > > Sigh. > > > > jim > > |

JP, you can easily set up Outlook Express for the NNTP newsgroup server
Microsoft has: msnews.microsoft.com is where it is located. All Microsoft's newsgroups are available from that server, and you can subscribe to any you wish, without logon or password - and you can use it in addition to any present news server your ISP might provide. Just go into Tools/Accounts and create a new News account with msnews.microsoft.com as the server. This allows you to Search, Hide Read Messages, track your own posts (in color yet!) and a myriad of other functions. If you already use Outlook (especially the 2003) version, OE becomes the news reader so you could have both open at the same time yet maintain your email/calendar, etc., separately. Directions for setting up a News account are in OE's Help. -- Chris H. Hi Chris,
Yes, I'm using Outlook and have for years. And your post came up beautifully in red. : - ) But am I wrong ( about the search feature) ? . . . What I was trying to say is that Outlook only searches for text in downloaded messages, not the ones that haven't been downloaded yet. What this means is that in order to search this newsgroup for the answer to my previous question about H.323; I would be required to first open (in order to download) all 1476 messages in the group. Maybe I'm still not being clear . . . It's easy to search subjects in Outlook but not the text in message bodies unless they've been previously opened. Hence, as subjects often don't contain or describe their contents very well it is difficult to search a whole newsgroup at once for a reference to a rather obscure item. If there is a workaround I'd love to hear about it as I've often been faced with exactly this problem. I used to belong to a Jaguar mailing list and would spend hours chasing down ephemera. By the way . . . You guys are the greatest ! thanks, jim "Chris H." <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:%(E-Mail Removed)... > JP, you can easily set up Outlook Express for the NNTP newsgroup server > Microsoft has: msnews.microsoft.com is where it is located.
