I have three computers on my network using a Microsoft
Broadband hub, all using ethernet cables. The winXP computers had no trouble whatsoever connecting to the network and the internet. I can share files between them and also print. Yet, the win98 computer is much worse off. It seems to be connected to the network and can be pinged by the other computers with success. Yet, when I try to connect to the internet from the win98 computer, I get a "Website found... waiting for reply" and then it just sits there trying, before finally giving me an error page. Also, when I try to access any shared files from this win98 computer, it is very very slow and usually ends up not working. From this computer, I can ping the winXP computers. Also, when I try to ping www.yahoo.com from any computer on the network, I get the following error: Reply from 10.33.71.17: Destination net unreachable. Ping statistics for 66.218.71.198: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Any ideas as to what this may be? I am pretty confident my TCP/IP settings on the win98 computer are setup properly. Thanks. Chris |

I had a similar problem with Win98. I had to enter DNS info on the 98 box
and everything worked great. I used "test" as a host name but anything would be fine. I have entered the DNS info into the 98 box. I got the
same problems with or without the DNS info entered. This 98 box has worked with the internet before (on different ISPs) but now I can't get it to work with this ISP through the Microsoft Broadband router. Its like the train that tried to go up the mountain, saying "I think I can, I think I can..." but it seems that it almost gets to the top and can't. It almost connects to the internet but wont. Its very weird. Anymore suggestions? >-----Original Message----- >I had a similar problem with Win98. I had to enter DNS info on the 98 box >and everything worked great. Have you enabled DNS on the 98 machine? Use the gateway IP
address or the ICS machine as the DNS address. You also need to run up NETBEUI over IPX/SPX from my experience >-----Original Message----- >I have three computers on my network using a Microsoft >Broadband hub, all using ethernet cables. > >The winXP computers had no trouble whatsoever connecting >to the network and the internet. Try a tracert to yahoo instead of a ping to see where
which node is failing. Otherwise, make sure the gateway and DNS both point to the router IP of 192.169.2.1 and the computer IP is in this subnet. Use ipconfig to check the data. You may want to assign a static IP on the 98 machine (use something like 192.168.2.254, gateway and DNS of 192.168.2.1, and mask of 255.255.255.0). Make sure the 98 stack includes File and Printer Sharing. Another problem I have found before is if computers on the LAN are running a firewall (or ICF), preventing file exchange between computers in the LAN. >-----Original Message----- >I have three computers on my network using a Microsoft >Broadband hub, all using ethernet cables. > >The winXP computers had no trouble whatsoever connecting >to the network and the internet. Sounds like it needs a winsock fix and possibly a spyware removal tool.
I believe the article is 241344 (You will need the windows setup files either on CD-ROM or on the hard drive).
