I replaced a dlink wireless router which I could not get
to do Voice in Windows Messenger with the MN-700. The voice is now working ok but am now getting quirky behavior in XP. First the Gateway Device Icon is rarely displayed in My Network Places and most of the time when accessing My Network Places the window won't even appear. Just the hour glass than nothing. If I click on the Start button to access Settings, it locks up too. After a minute or two, eventually all the windows open up. If I shut the system down it reports explorer.exe not responding but if I look in Task Manager it does not show as active. I have tried the following fixes. Reset the MN-700 Stopped and restarted SSDP and UPnP services The software and firmware for the MN-700 and Broadband Utilities are the most recent version. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Jim |

Turn off the UPnP client on your Windows XP machine.
It'll resolve the problem you describe below. -- Jason Tsang - Microsoft MVP Find out about the MS MVP Program - http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx "Jim" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:54d701c3e502$8fd6a510$(E-Mail Removed)... > I replaced a dlink wireless router which I could not get > to do Voice in Windows Messenger with the MN-700. The problem always happens when I try to access My Network Places. If the Residential Gateway Icon appears then there has been no problem. If not which is most of the time, then the window won't open. I speculate the problem is between whatever program/service creates the icon and the Router. Is it possible to reinstall the firmware upgrade to the router? Also do I need the MS Broadband Utility for the router to work or can I uninstall it? Thank you |

It does work.
The problem lies in the interaction between the UPnP client on the OS and the MN700. If you goto Add/Remove programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Networking, and uncheck UPnP, you should be able to access your "My Network Places" again without that specific explorer.exe instance hanging. Leave the UPnP and SSDP services at their default settings (both Startup types at Manual) -- Jason Tsang - Microsoft MVP Find out about the MS MVP Program - http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx "Jim" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:5c5a01c3e5e8$30d9f670$(E-Mail Removed)... > > >-----Original Message----- > >Turn off the UPnP client on your Windows XP machine. > >It'll resolve the problem you describe below. > > > >-- > >Jason Tsang - Microsoft MVP > > > >Find out about the MS MVP Program - > >http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx > > > >"Jim" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in > message > >news:54d701c3e502$8fd6a510$(E-Mail Removed)... > >> I replaced a dlink wireless router which I could not get > >> to do Voice in Windows Messenger with the MN-700. The Residential Gateway Icon is gone, I guess this is why they give you the Broadband Utility. There is one last thing, checking in Internet Gateway / Settings now shows a new service svchost as checked off to have access to the internet through the firewall. Is this correct? |

You don't even need the broadband utility.
Just use http://<internal lan address of the router> There is nothing you can't do without the broadband utility. As for your svchost issue, it's hard to say without more information. The internal port being forwarded is 3007 UDP. This only happened after I entered your changes. The only ports I have seen before were those for Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. As far as I know I don't have any applications that would use 3007. A quick search showed references to lotus mail and SQL server neither of which I have. I have ZoneAlarm so maybe I should just block it and see what happens. |
