Default MN700 & VPN Connection

Is anyone having trouble with an IPSEC VPN connection
through the MN700?

Some people are, others are not. Please give Product Support a call on this
issue.

We have set up a test environment using Windows 2003 Server's VPN Host
services and two different Windows XP VPN Clients (with all of the latest
updates - a Microsoft-only configuration). We even have the clients
hard-wired into the MN-700 to eliminate any variables due to wireless
configurations. We can connect and get authenticated through the MN-700 if
they are configured to use PPTP, but not if they are set up to use L2TP
(IPSec-based). When we change back to PPTP, all works again. We tried this
with three different MN-700s (all with the latest firmware). In talking
with Microsoft's tech support, we got a lot of conflicting information on
whether they actually support L2TP through the MN-700 (as in they did not
think so either). They even eluded to a specialized VPN client for XP that
is required to do L2TP properly, but then they said it is not available yet.
We then tried it with a Windows 2003 Server as the VPN Client (since that is
supposed to have an upgraded VPN interface) with the same results. Our
conclusion is that it does not work and that Microsoft's Tech Support does
not know how to configure it to make it work. Now what?

Default Re: MN700 & VPN Connection

I've passed this along to the dev team. I've been passing many of the
posts here along to them where specific configurations are specified.
I don't know if I will get a response or not. I wish I had
solutions...

Page 66 of the User Guide states:

Standards :
IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g, Wi-Fi certified, TCP/IP, NAT, DHCP, UDP,
FTP, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, HTTP, DNS, IPSec/VPN Pass through, WPA

I can only say that if anyone's VPN setup does not work transparently
with the MN-700 that so far there is no information whether there will
be a fix or what the timing of such a fix might be. Under those
circumstances, I'd exchange the product if your normal VPN
configuration does not work.

Maybe they should supply a white paper on how to get their own VPN solution
working with it - and then give it to their tech support people <g>.

*sigh* I bought the unit so that I could replace my aging
linksys, and I was all gung-ho to go for it. Then after
trying to connect to work using the Contivity VPN client
(ipsec as far as I'm aware, thats the only thing the
linksys has enabled) I get "host not found".. oh joy.

I certainly hope that they can fix the problem, because
until then, I'm only using the thing as an access point,
(with the linksys as the router) and i'm certainly not
getting the money out of it that I paid.

I've used the Sonicwall VPN client for an IPSec connection to an external
Sonicwall box through the MN-700. It works well when the client is wired to
the MN-700, with good performance. With a wireless client, throughput is
ridiculously low (a few KB/sec) but it does connect.

Default Re: MN700 & VPN Connection

I'm probably going to find the same to be true for a
problem I'm encountering. Company office has a Sonicwall
firewall; I tunnel in via Sonicwall/Safenet VPN clinet
from behind my broadband router; if the BBrouter is a
Linksys (wired or wireless) with the latest firmware I
can connect with no problems. If I replace the Linksys
with the MN-500 then I can no longer tunnel in. I
suspect the MN-500 does not support NAT-traversal or NAT
transparency, but I can't get Microsquish to say so.
Anybody had a similar experience or any words of wisdom?
