Default MN-700 WITH XBOX DMZ

I have the Microsoft MN-700 wireless router and the MN-740
game adapter. I have everything configured as outlined in
the manuals. My problem is that Rainbow six 3 and Counter
Strike play fine but when I try to play Project Gotham
Racing 2, I get to the lobby and then I get disconnected
from the host. When I try to return it says "game session
no longer active." I've tried port forwarding 88 and
3074....no luck. Then I tried giving the xbox a static IP
and running a DMZ...no luck. I do have a question...when
setting up the xbox in DMZ with the MN-740 do I use the IP
of the xbox or the MN-740? The reason I ask this is
because I never see the IP of my xbox listed in my router
menu screen, just the IP of the MN-740. Any other
suggestions would be greatly appreciated my wife has had
it with me spending 4 days non-stop on this...lol Thanks

Ric, I run the same hardware, but have not placed anything in a DMZ (highly
recommend you don't because it opens your system to the Internet), and am
not using port forwarding. I just works without trying to overthink it.
Take a look at the Xbox Live! information:
http://www.xbox.com/en-NZ/live/start/connect/faq which in part says, ". . .
no port forwarding is required for Xbox Live to work . . . Port forwarding
is required only if you are running a proxy server or true firewall instead
of or in addition to a NAT." The MN-700 doesn't do the latter, so no
forwarding or DMZ is necessary.

Chris,
Thanks for the reply. I agree that it is unwise to put
anything into a DMZ mode. However unlike your setup mine
doesn't "just work." I cannot connect to Project Gotham
Racing 2. I can however connect to my other games, with
those it does "Just Work." I wish I didn't have to even
think about it. In the past week I have learned more than
I ever wanted to know about networking and routers...LOL
Also just for your info the following post is quoted quite
frequently in other forums:

Microsoft is intentionally sending a spurious ICMP packet
to your router when it runs XBox Live Network - as a
warning about a problem that might happen later. This
(correctly) causes the some routers to terminate the
session. The ICMP packet was Microsoft's attempt to solve
another problem that routers from various companies were
having with their service and ICMP. Instead, it caused a
different problem.

Both problems may be fixed in the future, in the meantime,
you can try these steps to get routers that use filter
rules to connect to XBox Live Network.

Note that blocking ICMP - as recommended - in limited
situations may cause your router to intermittently
disconnect from the Internet. Also note that if you are
already using filters, you'll need to add the new filters
so that the existing ones continue working properly.
Support staff will not know how to solve this problem.

Upgrade to the latest router firmware.
Open ports 88 and 3074. Microsoft sources will say this is
unnecessary, however it is.)
This seems to be happening to me on this particular game.
By the way do you have this game? Does it work for you?
Maybe my router is defective.
Thanks,
Ric

And that information may just be incorrect, Ric. I would again suggest you
run through the information here:
http://www.xbox.com/en-NZ/live/start/connect/faq and if that doesn't help
you, then call the support line. I'll dig through some more stuff, too, and
post back if I find anything else enlightening that is valid.

Chris,
Thanks for your reply. The info might be incorrect,
however it is what's happening. I have been to the xbox
site numerous times, I think I have it memorized.
Additionally I have called Microsoft Support and when I
can talk to someone who speaks ENGLISH, they are no help
whatsoever. I am way beyond "resetting modem, resetting MN-
700, resetting MN-740, etc." I have been moved up the
chain of communication with Xbox, nothing. I have talked
with Sprint DSL help...nothing. I have spoke with
Earthlink support...nothing. Everyone keeps blaming the
other, you know the routine. The part that is frustrating
is that this of course happens to be my favorite
game...LOL. The other part is that it ran fine on a direct
connect (modem to xbox) connection before. The distance
from xbox to MN-700 is only 30 feet. I just didn't want
the cables. I figured with everything being Microsoft it
would gell.

Ric,
I was having the same problem with PGR2 when I joined a
session. I now host almost all my sessions and don't
usually have an issue. I have however had a problem
hosting now and then and what happens is when I am hosting
almost everyone in an 8 player race gets booted a couple
times. Then all of a sudden it just stops. I haven't had
an issue since I upgraded the firmware on the MN-740...Did
you upgrade the firmware? I am alos using a Linksys
Wireless G Router. Don't know if this helps at all. I hope
you get your problem fixed. Add me as a friend!

Default Re: MN-700 WITH XBOX DMZ

I came here looking for a solution to my problem of
linking up the MN-740 to my LInksys BEFW11S4 v.2 router.
After browsing, I'm suspecting a problem based on the MN-
740 trying to use 802.1x authentication as the root cause
of my inability to connect/frequent and quick
disconnects. After struggling with a firmware upgrade to
the 740, (don't ask how I did it, I have no
clue....persistance and stupidity perhaps...) I still
have the issue of unreliable connection.

My question, and thought to all is this: Is there a way
to ensure that the MN-740 is NOT trying to use 802.1x
authentication when connecting to a Linksys router using
WEP?

Bo,

The MN-740 does not do 802.1x so it shouldn't be trying to use it when
authenticating.
