I have spent 2 hours now trying to update my 2 brand new MN-740's to the latest firmware without any luck. Is this a bug on Microsoft's part. I am running XP without a firewall or VPN and have followed the instructions perfectly. It finds both of my adapters fine but fails on updating the firmware. I have a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router. I have tried to run the update wirelessly and directly connecting it to my PC. Thanks in advance for the help. faustus |

I only have one, so have never tried to update two at once. It's unclear if this is what you are attempting, but if yes, unplug one of them and see if you can get one of them to update. Then if successful, unplug that one and try the other. I was easily able to update mine. Tried 1 at a time and both at the same time. There are quite a few others in this thread that haven't been able to update theirs as well. Also some in the Xbox forums. Apparently I'm not the only one. Like I said I tried it wirelessly and direct. >-----Original Message----- >I only have one, so have never tried to update two at once. Also like I said in case I was unclear, The autoupdate file finds the adapters without a problem. Updating them is what I am having a problem with. It keeps bombing out and says the update was unsuccessful. >-----Original Message----- >I only have one, so have never tried to update two at once. I had the same problem. The way I resolved it was to return it to Best Buy! what firmware is in the 740 before you update it? ***UPDATE*** Last night I was on the phone with Microsofts's techs for like 2 hours tring to resolve this issue in updating firmware. We tried everything from booting in safe mode with networking support to canceling items running in the background in XP. No such Luck. My adapter still is not able to update the firware. The gentleman did say however that there have been quite a few people with the sasme problem. His suggestion is trying to run the update from another computer and perhaps it will work. I will try that on Friday when I get to work. For the person who took it back to Best Buy...did you get another unit or just get something different? I like these adapters but this is a real issue if I am not able to update firware in the future. I will post a replay to my findings. >-----Original Message----- >I had the same problem. I tried to update from a different computer, from a direct connect to the router and then tried 2 other computers.......all failed. I got a Linksys WET11 and am very, very happy with it. You can follow my problems with the MN-740 in this NG from earlier posts. Just so you know I did not return it because of connectivity issues, but I had other reasons including not being able to update the firmware. When something is expected to work a certain way and it doesn't and I see many post complaining about it, I figure why bother? There are other products out there that work with no hassle. Draino, What did you end up replacing the MN-740 with? What product? I am happy with the connectivity but not being able to update the firmware is an issue. What OS were you trying to update the MN-740 with? I mentioned to tech support that it would be nice to be able to update the firmware through the Xbox like we did with the boot disk and they said sooner or later you will be that it's still a new product. I want this to work correctly NOW. After all I have 2 of these at $100.00 a pop. >-----Original Message----- >I tried to update from a different computer, from a direct connect to the >router and then tried 2 other computers.......all failed. > >I got a Linksys WET11 and am very, very happy with it. > >You can follow my problems with the MN-740 in this NG from earlier posts. >Just so you know I did not return it because of connectivity issues, but I >had other reasons including not being able to update the firmware. > >When something is expected to work a certain way and it doesn't and I see >many post complaining about it, I figure why bother? Faustus, I replaced my MN-740 with a Linksys WET11. It is only "B" and not "G". I use the MN-500 so I have only "B" anyway. If I was using "G" I may have kept it but that is just something I can't comment on. I use XP Pro on all my machines, 3 desktops and 1 laptop. I have 2 X-Boxes also. Both X-Boxes run perfectly with the WET11. They never ever lose a connection and the MN-500 is 100% reliable. My network is rock solid and fast enough for what I use it for. I paid $79.00 for the WET11 ( http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g.../ut=183ec299bf 44bdd9 ) a much better deal because at the time Best Buy was getting $140.00 for the MN-740. I could have got it cheaper online but when you have kids and they want it now.........well sometimes you just can't say no, especially at Christmas ![]() My 2 biggest problems with the MN-740 were the fact that I couldn't update the firmware and the BNU was showing a 169.254.x.x address and there was no way to set the IP on the MN-740. It did connect and I could play "Live" but I couldn't see spending all that money for something that I wasn't totally happy with. I am a big fan of Microsoft and they make a great OS and a bunch of other great products, but when it comes to network hardware I would go with Linksys any day of the week.
