I have Verizon DSL coming into a Westell modem which in
turn is connected to a Microsoft MN-700 wireless base
station (router). The problem is that unless the modem is
turned on and allowed to cycle up to a connection before
I turn on the MN-700, I cannot connect to the internet
through the MN-700. This is a problem because I have all
my equipment on the same power strip, so everything comes
on at the same time. Is there a way to fix the
connectivity issue with the MN-700, or is this common for
all routers? Thanks!!

Default MN-700 Connectivity Issues

I have the same setup. The Westell needs a few seconds
to turn on before it will issue an IP address to your MN-
700. This would happen to any piece of equipment you
would use. Try plugging the Westell modem into a wall
outlet and keeping power to it all the time. It consumes
very little power, so that shouldn't be an issue. This
way, when you hit the switch on your power strip for the
rest of your setup, the MN-700 powers up and obtains the
IP address it needs from your Westell modem.

These components are designed to be left powered on 24 x 7.

Like Barb said, the hardware is supposed to be on continuously, and thus you
avoid the "restart" sequence. I can only think of twice (maybe three times)
that I've shut off my Fujitsu SpeedPort DSL modem (furnished by Verizon) in
about three years.

What happens when you shut the stuff down is the modem needs to talk to your
ISP, identifying itself and receiving the proper feed, then the base station
needs to do the same though the modem, and, lastly, then the computer needs
to do its little greetings to the base station.

In dial-up, remember back to the "handshake" signal we could hear while
dialing. About the same thing is going on between each of the hardware
devices. If you don't wish to leave the base station on, then you're going
to have that delay each time.

So, The problem with the router not wanting to connect
was due to the fact that the modem hadn't made its
connection to the ISP, but why wouldn't the router
recognize the connection once it was established at the
modem? Just curious.

OK, so that will fix that problem, but I keep getting the
message in the taskbar icon "Internet connection
Established" every so often, which leads me to believe
that the router is dropping the connection every once and
a while. I have a dynamic IP from Verizon and am using
DHCP on my LAN with a 2-week renewal so that can't be the
problem. Suggestions? Thanks Again!!

that's UPnP kicking in. The connection is not dropping. if the icon
annoys you, you can go into network places, right click "Internet
Gateway Connection" and unmark the show icon when connected checkbox.
I've learned to ignore it.

You can start reading here <G>

Universal Plug and Play. Used for keyboard, mouse, game controllers, etc.,
etc. The MN-700 is UPnP compliant.
