Update -

I called UKonline just after I sent the below message to the NGis, and they
told me I am only 500 metres from my exchange, and while some customers can
get 4 to 6 meg, my house is capable of 8 meg fully -

They mentioned that although BT is right in saying the current line can
manage UP TO 1 meg - that is on the technology BT has - whereas UKOnline has
faster technology they will apply to the same line, to bump it to the max 8
meg.

Curiousily, Homechoice (who use set-top boxes) told me I am outside their
needed reception so cannot even give me 1 meg....

something about the length of the wire from my house to their exchange being
very long.

Looks as if I may as well go with UKonline unlimited 1 meg at £9.99 per
month - I guess that is the cheapest 1 meg out there?

Never, ever, EVER believe the sales droids without checking out from at
least one other source. If they are agreeing that the line will only
support upto 1Mb from BT, there isn't alot they can do to boost it
further, by the way I do know of circumstances where companies are that
distance away from their exchange but can only get 512k.

It's the network which is the controlling factor not the technology..

But hey you do what you want anyway, so go ahead, just don't start on
about how UK online ripped you off, ok...
