Be Broadband have announced details of their service in London and are
now accepting ADSL2+ orders/triallists (up to 24MB downstream/1MB
upstream) for their pilot service

Their launch offer is:

free connection
No monthly fee until September 2005 then £20/month for life
£4/month extra if you want a static IP address.
Free ADSL wireless modem/router (Alcatel Speedtouch 716g) if ordered
before 18 September 2005

You appear to have to pay on a quarterly basis rather than monthly
(they also have an "office" version at £70/month).

I assume the offer is available at all 45 exchanges that Be were
originally going to enable in London but if you put your number in it
tells you when your exchange will be enabled (if they currently have
plans for it) and they will allow you to pre order now.

More details of their pilot service are at
http://www.BeThere.co.uk/pilot

Regards
Sunil

The links to their Fair Use and Privacy Policies are broken!

If I put my phone number in it says that Be is going to be in my area
within 6 months but that my line doesn't support broadband (despite the
fact I've got UK Online on it)!

https://www.bethere.co.uk/beonline/acceptableUse.do and
https://www.bethere.co.uk/beonline/privacyPolicy.do work for me.

I think their checker has (had?) problems with LLU lines..

They are also blocking port 25 though I can't find any reference to this,
and this comes from their web site:

"Be's Headquarters are in central London and our call centre and technical
support are based in India. We keep our management staff level to a minimum,
saving money on over head costs. By having our member and technical centres
in India, we can ensure 24x7 coverage and minimal waiting times while
keeping our prices competitive. "

Call me racist or whatever but I'll never sign up to them just because their
support staff are in India! Everytime I get an Indian on the other end of
the phone it's so frustrating because we can barely understand each other!

And with this being LLU there's sure to be many customers with problems (BT
and unbundling) which will call the support line and you'll have worse
support then bulldog!

Looks like you are right ...
From the Members services page:

Why can I no longer send outbound mail?
The Be network supports the industry's best practice for reducing spam and
we therefore require you to set your SMTP server to SMTP.BeThere.co.uk.

I have no problem with a call centre being in India.
They have a more can do and will do work ethic.
There are also some very talented technical people.
Their IT systems tend to be brand new too.
My company has just set up an operation in India and i have been involved in
the process.
I am very impressed with the India set up.

I agree that some companies employ people who can't speak English very well.
But that's really the companies fault at interview stage.
The same problem is apparent with a call centre in the NE of England for
example.
When I employ someone for a customer facing role, I expect their command of
English to be good,
be they from Newcastle, New Delhi or Newport.

But in my experience the front line customer services whould really be in
the UK to ease the pain.
The rest of the operation can be handled from India.

Why should this be a problem?

It may prevent you from sending as (E-Mail Removed).
If it fails, you can't send mail at all.
