I have had their broadband for about 2 months now, started off fine, but
seems to be deteriorating. I don't know if it is a problem with my set-up or
their server but I get a LOT of "page cannot be displayed", messages.
Sometimes clicking refresh will load the page, sometimes going "back" then
reloading will work, sometimes the only cure is to re-boot the PC. Any
suggestions as to what may be wrong at this end would be gratefully
received, or is it the server overloaded?

Could be DNS settings, have you got any alternative servers offered ?

Or if they use a web cache (to save on bandwidth) and the page is not yet
in the cache you could get this.

Also if you are using internet explorer and it is not set to update
automatically the page and it has changed, I dont know if other browsers
have this sort of setting and as a firefox user I am going off to have a
look and see
