Default TCP/IP network transport is not installed

I'm getting the following message on bootup:

TCP/IP network transport is not installed

Obviously, I now have no internet connection on that
machine now and since it is my main email computer, I'm in
serious trouble. How can fix this? I have tried
reinstalling Win98SE but it crashes too on the reboot. I
thought I had deactivated Norton before but it pops up
that something is writing to the boot record as the update
is ready to reboot.

If I have to reformat, how can retrieve my messages etc
from Outlook Express? What files are they stored in, etc?
I don't think I can start it to export them and IE
certainly will not start.

I would remove the nic and/or modem and network stuff...reboot

you should get no networking errors..... then reinstall

your EO files are *.dbx

Thanks for the help but I have given up on fixing it and will just reformat
and reinstall, ok but you are saying remove the cards first . . . ok, will
do which should stop WIN from trying to install them before I get the
drivers in. Other aspects of the OS seem to have become unstable so I think
now is the time to reinstall. Haven't ever done that on this machine and it
is 4 years old.
