Default 98 and 2K machine in the same network problem?

I have two 98 and 1 2K in the same network. I can see the
2K from the 98, and I can locate the 98 machines using "
search computer" from the 2K even though not actually see
it in my Neighborhood. But I can't access 98 from the 2K
or 2K from 98. I got something like " there is no logon
server to service the request." This happened
recently. Before this, I was able to access 98 from the
2k but not the other way. The 2K is a company provided
machine so I understand that there is lmitation. But that
allows me to do the file transfer. I don't know what
happeend to cause the recent problem. Any suggestion to
get around this? Thanks!

On the Windows 98 PC, right-click the Network icon on the desktop and select
Properties. Look at the Access Control tab. Do you have share-level or
user-level access selected?

No, share-level is correct. Are any of the PCs set up to log onto a domain?

Default Re: 98 and 2K machine in the same network problem?

I have a similar problem - the W2K machine is set up to log on to a domain
(at work), the W98 machine, my home machine logs on to itself, though using
the same username/password combination as the W2K machine. This allows the
W98 to access the W2K machine (at least the resources on it that I have
shared). For the W2K machine to access the shared drive on the W98 machine,
the only solution I have discovered is:
On the W2K machine, in Windows Explorer, Tools, Map Network Drive.
In the Path enter \\W98machinename\shareddrive (e.g. \\Fred\C)
Then, hit the "login as a different user", just below. Enter
W98machinename/userid (e.g. Fred/fred, take care with the slashes here) and
the corresponding password.
This lets both machines work with each other in both directions.
Having got this far, I still have a final problem. I have printers attached
to the W98 box, all shared. However, I have found no way of accessing these
printers from the W2K machine. I haven't found the equivalent of the above
as far as the printers are concerned.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

The 2K machine is set up to login to a domain. I can't
change that to workgroup ( it will lock me out of the 2k
maichine if I do that.)

Default Re: 98 and 2K machine in the same network problem?

Actually I needed to play a little trick on this... this
wa some time ago. I needed to set up the workgroup name
to the same as the domain name in the 2K machine. That
name of course is set by the company. Anf recently it wa
s changed. So I changed the workgroup name to it. When I
ddi that, this allowed to see the 2K machine from the
98. I also once was able to see 98 from 2K. only ince
But then I could not see it at all. only the very moment
I changed the name. The first time. Then I could not get
it anymore. Rather strange. I am talking about my
latest experience. Since I could not browse the 98 from
2k , I couldn't map drive either. I am still stucked.
Any suggestion?

That is exactly the problem I had - try what I suggested in my
previous mailing, i.e. from the W2K machine, in Explorer, Map Network
Drive, Connect using a different Name. You won't be able to browse
anything, so you'll have to type everything in by hand, as I
described.
Regards, Jack

Jack, thanks! I will try it agian tonight. I did try that
last night. But I kept getting wrong password prompt. I
thought that was due to " not being able to see" it.
Anyway, I will try it again.

Default Re: 98 and 2K machine in the same network problem?

Jack,

Your method finally worked for me. I found out that even
though I had at least one share file on 2K, I did not set
the access control on that right. I needed to add a guest
access. This was done at the "property" of the share
file. I also needed to set " guest account disable" off.
This was done at 2K the "user and password -> advanced
tab--> advanced bottom, then "user" file". In there look "
guest" property.

I still remeber that in the past I did not need to do map
drive to achieve file transfer. But at least I can
transfer files now.
