Default Whoosh test failure ... indicative of what?

What does a failed "whoosh" test indicate?

I have a USB modem connected *totally* independently to a BT POTS
socket, yet the sync light does nothing but flash, i.e. there is no
synchronising with the exchange.

The ISP did a whoosh test, which failed, and called BT in.
BT say there is connectivity.

Absolutely nothing else is plugged into this phone socket, yet i cannot
get the modem to sync ... faulty modem?

But what did the whoosh test mean?

hmmm ..... oddly enough, after BT reported connectivity, the light has
since stopped flashing. One wonders to what it is they aren't
admitting...?

Hi,

Without seeing the exact results that woosh produced it is difficult to
say what failed. Woosh checks a lot of different things from the copper
cable through to whether or not you are pingable. It can detect various
different problems, but may not always be able to identify the exact
cause, i.e. it may say the line is not in sync, but this could be because
of a faulty modem.

There's no such thing as a "whoosh" test....
However, there is a "woosh" test.......

But we do .... that's just it. We didn't, we were 'wooshed' and failed
but now we got it.

For that matter, there's no such thing as a "woosh test" either.

Woosh is a test platform NOT a test.

The woosh platform covers exchange stuff, private wires, isdn, etc. adsl &
sdsl are just the latest bits to be added to it.

Hmmmm indeed. After months of flawless operation, my modems sync light
has indicated a problem twice this week. It kept re-trying to no avail.
A phone call to those very nice chaps at Demon resulted in them
instigating the woosh test. They phone me back as soon as its done - and
hey presto, the min before they phoned, the sync had come back - but no
problem found!?!
Coincidence? I think not!

Note - I have a spare modem and that too couldn't get sync.

Note2 - there have been numerous BT vans parked down the road this last
week..... Coincidence ?????

It would be nice to know what the test does exactly. Does it reset
something in the exchange??

The Whoosh test will fail if your line is not in synch, but doing such a
test has been known to soft reset a port which is possibly why your service
restarted when Demon tested yours...
