Default networking, win 98se....etc

I have just read that many of us are all having the same
problems with networking different computers with
different operating systems.... it is obvious that
microsoft has done something to screw us all up.... I
wonder if anyone from microsoft ever reads this stuff and
answers people... At this time, I am getting hundreds of
emails from microsoft that mcafee won't allow because of a
virus.... very strange... maybe we are all wasting our
time and should get apples.....

Start with the basics.

McAfee is doing the right thing. Those emails contain a computer
virus and have a fake Microsoft address. Microsoft NEVER sends
updates or patches by email. Any such message that claims to be from
Microsoft is a fake, no matter how realistic it looks.

I'm sorry if you're having trouble networking different operating
systems. All versions of Windows can network with each other when set
up properly. I've found that these tips solve the vast majority of
networking problems:

1. If you have Windows XP, permanently disable its built-in Internet
Connection Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use
only on a direct modem connection to the Internet. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...c_firewall.htm

2. Disable and un-install all other firewall programs (ZoneAlarm,
Norton Internet Security, etc) on all computers while troubleshooting.
Don't just disable them. Un-install them, and don't re-install them
until everything is working. For security, disconnect from the
Internet while the firewall programs are un-installed.

3. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._protocols.htm

4. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

those messages are not generated by Microsoft. Those are
a scam.
