I am running a 2 computer network (both win98) with a
router. Computer "A" is prompting for a network password for a profile that was deleted long ago. If I enter a 'cancel' to the password request, I am not able to access the Network Neighborhood beyond the top level symbol. I am not able to see computer "B" nor its shares. But, the Find command does see computer "B". But everything else I need works...internet, email etc. If at the network password prompt on "A", I simply enter carrage return (rather that 'cancel') I gain full functionality of Network Neighborhood and I can access the shared folders on computer "B". But at this point I can no longer use my outlook express because it starts asking for all kinds of passwords. Computer "B" does not prompt for any network passwords and can see computer "A" via Network Neighborhood, it can access shared folders on "A" and the shared printer hosted by "A". Computer "B" has all the access of "A" regardless on how I respond to the network login prompt on "A" I have spent hours reading all the similar problems presented in this forum, but I am not sure which answers my predicament. I did everything as directed by the article.
It did not work. If I left the primary login as "Windows" not only did I not get Network Neighborhood, but I could no longer access my Outlook...user names were presented but I could not get to the password field. I put the primary login back to client for Microsoft networks and was back with the same problems I detailed below in my first quest for the answer. Also, I indicated in my details that I was being prompted for a password for a profile which was removed from the system years ago..I have no profiles to work with when I look at passwords via control panel. But, I can see numerous refences to this phantom account if I look for it in the registry.. I fine it referenced in the following Keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\ProfileReconciliation HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\dddd (where dddd is the offending profile name) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Tioga\users\dddd (where dddd is the offending profile name HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\ProfileReconciliation How do I set blanks as a passord when there is no profile. This is quite the puzzle. >-----Original Message----- >delete the offending ??.pwl file from c:\windows > > >"Richard G. Did you see the notice that if you're using profiles (I know, you think you
aren't but obviously you are) that you should instead look here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;156826 -- Richard G. I'm not sure if your implying I can't read or acknowledging
the fact there must be some residual stuff in registry. There are no profiles, real or imagined, to be seen via the tools in Control Panel I used regedit, it review the following (as per: 156826) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ProfileList The Key exists, and it show : Name : (default), Data: (no value set) Do I still remove the key, or was it expected that I would see a user name hear... Regedit is intimidating because Microsoft always says use at your own risk. >-----Original Message----- >Did you see the notice that if you're using profiles (I know, you think you >aren't but obviously you are) that you should instead look here: > >http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;156826 > >-- >Richard G.
