Default advice please re line quality



Just had an interesting conversation with BTo sales. They can see from my
records that I have applied for adsl many times each with a negative result.
The lady was very helpful and spoke to BT wholesale about why my line has
been failing. They say my line is on amber, but fails due to line quality,
not distance. They suggested I go through to faults department to check for
line faults that would not register on voice, but would affect any line
test.

So I phone through to faults and the lady checks my line. She says it is
registering a fault, that it is not registering that my phoneline equipment
exists. Asks if I have anything plugged into the line and I explain I have
a double splitter on the phoneline that I dont use anymore, in fact its cut
in half. So we hang up, I remove the splitter and she phones me back to say
its now registering okay with zero faults.

Now if the line was registering before as being faulty line equipment, could
this affect the adsl line test? If this is the case I am very surprised
nobody has mentioned this to me before.

Are they talking out of their poophole or are they correct in saying that
faulty line equipment can affect the line test?

They are correct - try applying for ADSL again (perhaps ask for a manual
order?)

Try and disconnect as much as equipment from the line as you can, unused
telephones, splitters, sky boxes etc between applying and waiting for the
line result.

aha! thanks Sunil, I trust in what you say as you know your stuff. That
double socket has been there a long time, I never considered that it may
affect any line result. I feel a bit more confident now, although as
before, am not building my hopes up too high.
I have tried placing a new order, but the order system is down at the
moment.
Why is it they dont tell you these things? If at the time of my last line
check they got those results, it would have taken a quick phonecall to check
whether I have anything connected to the line.

I found that when I reterminated the master socket on the line side (really
BT responsibility) my ADSL was solid. This was after I had been experiencing
some sync drops.

btw I am -65dB with no sync drops, just a few minor errors on the uplink.

I never thought this would be an issue
I thought the test was on the quality of the line that came into the
building not on the stuff you have connected inside
I only have one BT socket in the house to which is connected phone, sky and
modem
I have 2 dormant lines that come into the house also and have arranged with
BT to swap my existing line with one of the other two to try and establish
if BB will be available on one of these.
I will now also disconnect the splitter and sky when I place the order and
see if that helps

I never considered it either. I just assumed they checked the line itself
and not what may be connected to it.
