Here's what I was wittering on about. Oh and I received a "welcome to
broadband" email from freeserve today!

I ordered the 30 day trial with freeserve, and one day later rang to cancel
the whole thing, because I had chosen another ISP instead.

They said they would cancel it, but on phoning again the following week, I
found they hadn't, and had to request cancellation again.

I then went to order ADSL with the other ISP, only to find that the BT line
had already been bought for the 30 day trial by freeserve, and I've been
told there is no way of cancelling it, and I can't get the ADSL I want now
until at least 13 Feb.

So you are complaining about getting FREE ADSL from Freeserve - rather than
paying someone else for it!

It isn't free...I have cancelled the service, I never wanted it in the first
place, I regret the day I signed up, and it was only a day later I
cancelled, and I now have a redundant ADSL line that I can't get rid of for
a month! Eclipse is who I want to sign up with.

What about having 'someone else' take over the line?
That should (AIUI) cancel the ADSL.

I think the thing here is that Freeserve is not offering the customer as
much FREEdom as they could be by taking far to long to put ADSL removals
into place. The end result is that people who want to change from Freeserve
to another ISP have a hard time. They also don't support ADSL Migration away
from Freeserve - that's hardly likely to make people feel free once they've
taken the "no risk trial" plunge.

Apparently they now do - after normal contract termination anyway. I would
doubt if they would cooperate by effectively paying the activation fee for
some other ISP in the 1-month-trial!

Good on you if you've got them to agree to a migration, I tried just a
couple of weeks ago and was told outright that they wouldn't do it because
they "didn't support migration" that was from someone in their customer
services dept. Migration still costs end users - albeit a little less than a
straight out activation. The real advantage is that it saves all the
rigmarole that the original poster was "moaning" about - i.e. all the wasted
time and inefficiency associated with (delayed) ADSL removal from the line,
only then to have it reinstalled.

I think any ISP (or company for that matter) with "free" in its name had
better make sure it's doing everything possible that it can to live up to
its name with regards to how it makes its customers feel through its
policies and practices.

I have no direct experience! Someone on this newsgroup stated that they did
(when I said I thought they didn't!) and pointed me towards their entry in
adslguide.org.uk

Transferring the line should (as I understand it) cancel the ADSL on
the line.
'You' can then apply in the new name for the other ISP.
