All you do on the XP PC is to set the dial-up connection to 'share this connection' in windows XP - no software is needed. This would mean the XP PC would need to be on in order for the Win98SE PC to connect to the internet. Another way is to buy a router - we have a Draytek Vigor 2600, but it costs about £140. EBuyer have an 'our-brand' router for about £40 I think, which does pretty much the same thing. If you buy a router both PC's will of course need a network card/plug and cables. This is a slighty better way of doing things, as the router functions like a network switch, and only it has to be switched on to connect to BT. James H |

It has this in the article: What do you need to get started? All the computers in your network must be running either Windows 2000 or Windows XP |

However, it's not installed by default on win98, you have to goto :- add/remove programs/ windows components and install it from the Win98 CD On XP it's installed when you install XP. the cheapest way to network two PC's is:- 2 x Ethernet network cards ( NICs) 10/100 type 1 x Ethernert cat5 CROSS-OVER cable It's important that it's a CROSS-OVER cable and not a `straight' cable though you can use a `straight' cable with a `cross-over' adapter on one end. And to learn how to do it, you can't do better then use the tutorials on http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ as suggested by Mcploppy Clansman |
