Currently I have a desktop upstairs which has a USB adsl modem connected to
it. My adsl provider is BT. I want to share the adsl conection with my lap top. I have a samsung laptop which has a wireless port built into it. I would be gratful if someone can advise me of what other equipment I need to purchase and how complex is it to configure. Many thanks Tony |

Get one with both ethernet ports and an 802.11g wireless port. Plug your PC into the Ethernet port, and use the wireless port for your laptop. If you are using the laptop upstairs, plug it into a spare ethernet port to take advantage of the speed. Make sure you get one which has DHCP and NAT - this is a great first line of defence against unwanted intrusions. d _____________________________ http://www.pearce.uk.com |

Throw away the USB modem and get a combined ADSL modem/router/switch and wireless access point, such as the USR9106, or the Draytek2600G. It's everything you need in one box, and can share a single ADSL connection between more computers than you can ever use. Not only that, but your local computers can be configured to share files with each other. You could let visitors use their computers on your ADSL account too, without interfering with any of yours. Setup pages are easily accessed via a web browser from any computer on your local network. Rod. |

That's what I use, and I now regret not having the Wireless Access Point separate from the router. The best position for one isn't always the best for the other, and the wireless range of some integrated ones isn't always what one would hope for. -- Jim Crowther "It's MY computer" (tm SMG) Avoid more swen by dumping your old Usenet addresses, and put 'spam' or 'delete' somewhere in the Reply-to: header.
