Default Fixed IP issues

Folks,

My exchange becomes BB enabled in a few weeks and I've already signed up
with Plusnet. Counting the days!

One thing that just crossed my mind ... from what I read, I will have a
fixed IP address (or the same one anyway, if not 'fixed').

1. I use a Vigor 2600 router already for ISDN with default firewall
settings - does having a fixed IP mean I could be a victim of anyone
maliciously 'targetting' my IP address? I don't run any web servers ftp or
anything like that.

2. I run several different web sites which operate in the same area (nothing
illegal, immoral or controversial!) but, simply not to divulge my personal
details, I post to different usenet groups using two different nicknames.
Will a fixed IP mean people could identify that the posts came from the same
person?

Cheers,

Sue Bennett (the real one)

Yes, you could be. Chances of it happening are very rare though (I've had
the same IP for 18 months now and no problems), and if it does happen for
some reason you can request a change of IP address.

Yes, they could do if they were so inclined. However, they probably could at
the moment too on dialup, unless you disconnect and reconnect before posting
with the other nick.

Having a fixed IP makes it easier for you to be attacked by malicious
individual but a good firewall will reduce that considerably and keep all
but the singularly determined at bay. With a fixed IP it becomes easier
to identify postings even if you change your identity

You would be wise to tell Plusnet to 'disable' (or is it activate?)
reverse DNS lookup on your IP when the account is open so that folks
can't get your username from your posting headers.

Use the "Contact Us" section of their portal to raise a ticket.

You could still be targeted. If you get a router with a DDOS "filter", this
may help.

Yes, because the posting contains information in the header which shows your
posting.

For example, my postings contain

X-Forwarded: for lethe.plus.com via NNTP Proxy

This means that any post I make from 13th November onwards, will have this
information.

Pete.

Yes, unless the news server you post to doesn't add a NNTP-posting-host
(or similar) header.

She should switch to claranet's claranews, Teranews, or any one
of the many others out there that don't add those headers.

Any free ones like these? I use cis.dfn.de which is good but looks like they
show IP.

The 2600 has this, but it's switched off by default. Just enter 192.168.1.1 in
your web browser to get to the setup pages, then go to the firewall section.

Go to www.grc.com and pick "Shields Up" for a series of tests to show how
visible your computer is on the net.

Rod.
