Having just received my Speedtouch 330 from Pipex I wondered if there was a
big market for the "does anyone want to swap this brand new modem for a router?" trade )I suppose most people just have the one pc to connect but a fair few must have more than one......or am I being a bit daft? In a nutshell, and this will be crap :-} ....it will seperate the "outside" network from the "inside" network - if you have a 4 port router (with or without modem), the "uplink" or modem connection will be kept seperated from the 4 "user" ports by use of something called NAT (network address translation). The router will be given an IP address, either by a seperate modem or by one built in when it connects to the ISP. Lets for the sake of argument call that IP address 81.82.83.84 The computers plugges into the "user" side of the router will be given something completely different, ie. 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.2 etc The router will remember which computer asked for information from the internet, and will pass that request along and "out". When it comes back, it will remember which computer asked for the information and pass it to the correct computer. This also means that any hacker who tries to attack the only IP address he has for you (no matter how many PCs you have plugged in) will only get as far as the router, and since it wasn`t expecting anything back from the hackers` IP address, it will be ignored. Since the hacker has no way of knowing what the IP addresses are that the router gave to the "internal" network, there`s almost no chance he would ever be able to hack into them. -- Please add "[newsgroup]" in the subject of any personal replies via email or you are likely to be spam filtered :-} |

Cheers, Colin, that sure beats the usual "go check Google" crap.

As someone who is perhaps a bit anal about Usenet composition, I must say that uk.t.b is probably the best NG, in that respect, I have ever come across. And, much as it pains me to admit it, there is something to be said for the above statement. (Not that I could bring myself to do it.) -- Trevor Dennis Remove s-p-a-m to email |

We (the regulars) normally politely point out to someone that top posting isn't the done thing. If they then top post again, we fall upon them, and devour them like the animals they are. Somehow word gets out though, even though we leave no survivors. Pete. -- NOTE! Email address is spamtrapped.
