ntl came and installed my cable modem yesterday - no problem with that.
The Broadjump installation software worked fine but after registration I was met by an error message on IE6 and constant requests to dial from OE6. Forte Agent worked fine with text.news.ntlworld.com. A closer examination of the Internet options found it to be contaminated by Freeserve default mail servers and proxies - the PC had been bought from PC world - surprise, surprise. I turned off the proxies and put in the right mail servers - I killed the dial up connections and voila! - it all worked. I tried a 4 meg download and saw 7 to 15 kByte/s - is this typical for 600kbit/sec broadband at 9:00pm. I suspect some contention issues because I live in an area where a lot of professional people live and I guess many of them may have broadband. A Couple of questions? I know the ntl proxies have been flaky in the past - is it worth using them to speed up browsing? Can someone point me to a list. Finally - I managed to remove the Freeserve logo from IE but the "provided by Freeserve" crap is still there - does anyone know how to get rid of this? JPG JPG |

Try again when it's a 'quieter' time, if you get the same results try turning the CM off for a short time & then back on (your config will be reloaded) if it is still slow try going to ... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...ips/index.html (it's worth putting it into your favourites)... & trying some of the tips & the speed test. If it's still the same you will have an early introduction to the infamous 24 hour helpdesk (only open 12 hours a day)... > > A Couple of questions? > > I know the ntl proxies have been flaky in the past - is it worth > using them to speed up browsing? Can someone point me to a list. Unless you explicitly configure others you will always go through the poxey proxies except when they have fallen over or been turned off (because they have fallen over). As for a list, try the above site... > > > JPG -- B-) Life is pain..... Deal with it!! |
