Default BroadBand - what is it

When one orders broadband what exactly happens to the phone line?

I know something happens at the exchange end but what do they actually
do to the line?

This is an excellent site for new broadband users, with a selection of help
and advice boards for new users.

If you are considering or waiting for broadband, you will read a lot of
useful info on this site.

AFAIK they change the linecard which is the exchange end of your phone line
to one which can cope with ADSL as well. The normal phone service is reconnected
as before while the DSL connection on the new linecard will be wired
to the correct equipment.

Actually they put another piece of equipment on the line between the
linecard & the line, which allows the voice signal thru but adds the
DSL signal as well...

i.e

Linecard.......................Bar pair/line, changes to

Linecard................DSLAM..................Bar pair/line

HTH

Also, if you connect the ADSL modem/router before the line has been
"broadbanded", then even though *you* may hear no interference (provided
you've connected microfilters), the person at the other end of the call will
hear interference: it sounds like a fast-ticking watch followed by a burst
of white noise (hiss), repeated every few seconds. I know this because I
connected up my dad's ADSL router and fitted microfilters everywhere, in
preparation for broadband being enabled. Then I heard the tick-tick-hiss
when he phoned me and realised that it wasn't such a sensible thing to do in
advance of the line card being changed at the exchange!

There is also another bit of equipment to split the voice off the DSLAM to
the line card

DSLAM Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexor
