So after years of telling my Dad he needs the Internet...

He was convinced that the Internet was a dangerous place full of
viruses and didn't want anything to do with it. No matter how hard I
tried I couldn't convince him otherwise, until a couple of weeks ago
when he bought a new PC and decided to take the plunge.

NTL was up his street so he ordered a 150K connection. The engineer
came and fitted the USB modem and left him with an install CD.

"It keeps resetting itself when I try to install the software" he said
on the phone, so I went to see what the problem was.

The install procedure ran smoothly until the point at which it asked
for the USB cable to be connected, I plugged it in, that's funny, lot
of blinking lights going on there (sinking feeling). I continued
through the installer until the point at which it had to send some
stuff to NTL - pause, then bang! RPC error, shutting down in 2
minutes.

I unplugged the modem again and when it rebooted had a look in the
task list, sure enough, MSBLASTER.EXE was running so killed that and
deleted the "Run" registry key and tried again, same thing. There must
be so much blaster traffic out there it is impossible to complete the
install process.

So my Dad must be one of the few people to get a virus before he has
even been connected to the Internet!

But surely you setup Zonealarm or another firewall before you even thought
of connecting?

My 1st Q would be where did the PC come from was the virus allready there?
