I'm currently toying with the idea of buying an Ipaq 3970, which is bluetooth enabled. Primarily for a "boys and toys" item, but also for GPS (same catergory I would assume;-) Anyway, since I have ADSL, and one machine in the network, that has inbuilt bluetooth, I was wondering if this could in fact be used as a wireless conection to the internet through that "paid for" connection? My gut feeling is that it cant - and goggle hasnt shown me one way or the other, so hence asking here! Anyone know if it can be done (and if alternative hardware is needed) (The machines are currently hardwired via a cisco switch - but have been toying with WiFi for other machines in the house - ie kids bedrooms (with net nanny of course;-) Any advice appreciated. Using that, you can then connect your ipaq. You'll also need to install a wireless CF card. This is costing money by the minute ![]() Alternatively, you could snap up a bargain on ebay. This Toshiba e740 Pocket PC has in-built wireless and cost about £180 incl P+P (shipped from the US). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=3039000732 |

I recently bought a package from Holux UK and have been amazed at how good the voice navigation is. Andrew. |

As mentioned, I had been looking at this as a real option for other PCs. Obviously the 3970 doesnt have WiFi;-( >Using that, you can then connect your ipaq. You'll also need to install a >wireless CF card. This is costing money by the minute ![]() I had looked at the 5540, but the cost is far to high! I had managed to source the 3970 today (last one!) for £267 inc Vat. Went to buy, but the screen has a mark on it. (Ex display in comet!) As you say below - if I were to go this route, Id be better off with a device already WiFi enabled. (Have you seen the price of their addons!) >Alternatively, you could snap up a bargain on ebay. Problems always seem to follow me, and I would hate to make the purchase, and either, not recieve the goods, recieve with a fault, get stung by customs, or eventually develope a fault. Good prices though - and the Toshiba does look like a good alternative to the Ipaq. However - can bluetooth be used like a network connection? Or is WiFi/USB the only alternative for an internet connection? Cheers -- Marquee Hire at cheap rates from www.37b.co.uk |

Yup. My network consists of 5 PCs. One of them has a bluetooth adapter built in. It isnt the "primary" connection, so maybe that could make a difference! As you say, its all about research! >I think that should be possible - one of the configuration options for >Internet connection is via your ActiveSync connection. >Having said that (and assuming it is really intended to allow you to surf >via USB connection to your PC) I have never tried it. To be honest, the ability to do so is not my major consideration. As mentioned GPS would probably be that. However, I would hate to make a purchase and say those fateful words "if only I had bought an "XYZ", cos that can do it! I bet you know what I mean! ;-) >You are more likely to get an informed answer on NGs such as >microsoft.public.pocketpc or via websites such as http://www.cewindows.net/. Part of the fun and frustration;-) To be honest, even if it can be done, its likley the connection via bluetooth is going to be so slow, I would give up. But until I find out........ Have now found the following URL, which suggests that it is possible to connect via Bluetooth: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=445 Doesnt say how fast the connection is though;-( -- Marquee Hire at cheap rates from www.37b.co.uk |

Just to correct myself Bluetooth 2 is 4, 8, 12 Mbit/s, not MB/s. Bah these sheets we were given are crap lol. Think they mean 1Mbit/s for the 1.1 specification. Ian. |
