Can I use a 3thrd w2k computer as a Server/host, then
network the other 2 W98Se as clients ? See message below, is this how it can be done without W98SE and ICS ? thanks Clement Subject: ICS does not install from Win 98 SE recovery CD ( Internet sharing connection From: "Linda" <(E-Mail Removed)> Sent: 8/30/2003 8:51:38 AM I have had no luck with ICS on our home network. I have removed all traces of ICS - it just did not work. I have 8 PCs connected via ethernet, a Linksys switch, and a Linksys dsl/cable modem hub and all works beautifully. We even have a Linksys 2-port PrintServer with 4 10/100 ports (that serves as an additional hub for our laptops) that networks two of our older printers. The PC that the dsl/cable modem hub is connected to serves as the "main" pc and everything else connects vis DHCP as controlled by the DSL/Cable modem. It is simple and works beautifully. We have Win98, WinME, Win2k and WinXP computers all working together with few problems. This is an easy, inexpensive solution to home networking. >-----Original Message----- >Cable Modem, Speedtream Router, Speedstream Switch and two >Win 98 SE IBM computer.Sharing internet connection has >worked 6 months. I've written a web page with details: ICS for Win2000 - Broadband WAN Connection http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...tall_bband.htm But there's no reason to do that. Your Speedstream router can share the cable modem connection between all of the computers. If the router doesn't have enough ports for all of them, connect the router to the uplink port on the switch and use the other switch ports for computers. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. thanks for your help.
Yes, I can share the Internet connection between all of the 3 computers, either 2 with Speedstream router or as you stated all 3 computers via the 5 port Speedstream Switch I connected to the Speedstream router. The computers can " see " each other in network neighbourhood, However when I want to share files the network, I cannot share the files. I assumed it was the lack of the ICS not being present. As Linda stated there is another way,or as you stated ICS is not necessary( I always assumed that ). How would the 3 computers share without ICS ? thanks for your help. If you've installed it on any computer(s), un-install it. Connect one of the Speedstream router's LAN ports to the uplink port of the switch. Connect the computers to regular ports on the switch. Since the computers can " see " each other in Network Neighborhood, they can also share files with each other. However, you say that they can't share the files. We need more information to help you solve the problem: How are you trying to share files? What exactly are you doing, and what exactly happens when you do it? What is the complete text of all error messages? The more details you give, the more likely it is that someone can help. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
