Win 2003 standard edition, AD.
I have set up the server for auto loing, on power up. If there is a power failure, and then server is started Auto Login would not work, the server shows a message 'Could not login because of unexpected shut down' and asks the reason for shutdown to be entered before it can log in. Can this message after power failure, be bypassed so that Auto Login will work even in case of power failure? If yes how? The reason I have set the Autologin for some programs which can not be run as service, are put in the startup folder. If power fails at night, someone will have to go to office just to explain the server, why it shut down un-expectedly, other wise those programs which need to run all the time will be down. You really ought to get a good APC (or comparable) UPS that will trigger a
graceful shutdown of the server via the management cable when there's significant power loss or failure. No server should be without a UPS. The APC ones with the latest software will usually bring the server back up again afterwards. Have you looked into srvrany to run the programs as services? I personally don't like autologin on a server myself. sharad wrote: > Win 2003 standard edition, AD. > I have set up the server for auto loing, on power up. > If there is a power failure, and then server is started Auto Login > would not work, the server shows a message 'Could not login because > of unexpected shut down' and asks the reason for shutdown to be > entered before it can log in. > Can this message after power failure, be bypassed so that Auto Login > will work even in case of power failure? Thanks Lanwench, please see my comment and further question

I have a 4 Hrs back up UPS and before the batteries drain out, it will give signal to the server to shut down. Unfortunately this power failure was because of some other device that made the UPS trip off immediately. > Have you looked into srvrany to run the programs as services? Is it a thrid party software or some white paper on 'how - to - - make - registry - entries- for running program as service'? BTW: After autologin the workstation forcefully locks as soon as startup programs are run. sharad > sharad wrote: > > Win 2003 standard edition, AD. > > I have set up the server for auto loing, on power up. > > If there is a power failure, and then server is started Auto Login > > would not work, the server shows a message 'Could not login because > > of unexpected shut down' and asks the reason for shutdown to be > > entered before it can log in. > > Can this message after power failure, be bypassed so that Auto Login > > will work even in case of power failure? For single servers, I use SmartUPS 1400s or 1500s with the latest software & haven't had any problems.... > >> Have you looked into srvrany to run the programs as services? You need srvany (previous misspelling was a typo) from the resource kit, and see MS KB 137890 > > BTW: After autologin the workstation forcefully locks as soon as > startup programs > are run. K - better than nothing! |

Thanks Lanwench,
before this post I tried seach on srvrany and svrany and landed on the correct web page, downloading the resource kit now. Just for your info, it's a classic example how things will go wrong: it's a local (India) make UPS, use if for server + router+leased line modem, and the accident was because the boss put his mobile charger on the spare socket when power was off and the charger had problem (which mostly casued the fuse to blow in first place on mains power) and it tripped the UPS. ![]() ... haha! Anyway have removed the spare socket now. The UPS is is very good one, as far as I remeber this was first trip after 3 years. Bye and thanks, I too did want to make those program run as service, so I need not run AutoLogin..
