Hey folks,

Does anyone know why a T1 would be used over something like a cable
company's broadband access at 8Mbps.

Some possibilities that come to mind:

1) Price.
2) Cable is a shared medium. If things get really busy, your share of
the bandwidth could be less than a T1.
3) Security. As I understand it, someone who knows what they are doing
could alter their hardware to read your traffic. Tapping into a T1
requires physical access, which is slightly harder.

If the customer needs only 1.5 Mbps, and needs that rate in both
directions, it might be reasonable. It may also have to do with
the T1 being a pipe to a specific provider that has better
connectivity, higher reliability, lower price, or is somebody's
uncle. Hard to say...

1) the cable promises 'up to' 8, I'll bet.
2) cable is cool if you're the only dude in the neighborhood who has it.
All the folks in the vicinity are basically sharing 'one pipe'. When
everyone has it, it's pretty easy to bring it to it's knees. As I
understand, T1 like DSL is your own 'dedicated' pipe, so it doesn't matter
how many nearby neighbors use it.
