In Windows XP, an Network icon is displayed in the Notification Area
(systray). I have been searching for a week how to do this in Win98, hoping
to find that elusive tick-box that says "show icon in taskbar..." without
success.
Appreciate any input. Thanks

Windows 98 does not support this, but if you search with Google or your
favorite search engine you may be able to find a utility for Windows 98 that
does.

You can purchase "The Win98 Resource Kit" for about $25 dollars now and it
has a program called Quiktray.exe you can use to place anything you want in
the systray.
There is also a version on the Win98 CD you can install under
\tools\reskit\help\rkbook.exe but I think it lacks that particular tool.

What I found on the CD was QuickTray.exe.
Will give it a try. Thanks

I have the resource kit loaded and found Quiktray.exe and viewed all the
options for it but I can't seem to find anything that relates to Network.
Any more clues? Incidentally, the Resource Kit can be downloaded free from
Microsoft FTP site.
Thanks

I am not aware of an application that comes with Win98 that will show a
network connection status or allow one to enable or disable a network
connection at will or reconfigure a network connection. The program I'd
guess you'd be looking for is one similar to Rnaapp.exe for a network
connection instead of Dial-up that would show connection status and pull up
winipcfg, Network configuration or Network Neighborhood. Last time I used
it Wingate did exactly what you seem to desire without using Quiktray.exe,
however it does cost money and you'd probably have to install it on every
computer.
I was suggesting that if you found a program that did this, as another
person posting had suggested, and wanted it placed in the systray just like
XP Quiktray.exe would be the program to do it with.
The purchased Resource Kit comes with a book. Depends on your reading
preferences I guess. Even though I read computerized text most often and
have a laptop I always keep a book of some sort in the bathroom, several by
the bed and one or two in the car.
