System.ini device file not found

I am using a win98 OS and lately i encountered a problem
with the explorer.exe file and hence i reinstalled win98.
The system is connected on a network with a 2000 server.
Now the problem is that the IP settings r not getting
confugured automatically. The DHCP is enabled also. The
system is not asking for a network logon and straightaway
goes in to the windows environment. When i restart the
system again, it displayed the following error

"Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run
windows or a windows Application.

The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this
device file, but then device file no longer exists.

If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling
the associated application using its uninstall or setup
program.

nwlink.vxd
"

If nwlink.vxd is the file that is missing, then what could
be the chance for me to create the file again with the
precise contents? I am not able to connect to the network
though the localhost is pinging with no problem.

Please help me with a good solution.

Thanks in advance.
Prakash

NWLINK.VXD is normally one of the files Windows combines to make up
VMM32.VXD, located in c:\windows\system. You could use the System File
Checker(SFC) and extract that file from your Windows 98 CD to
c:\windows\system. I would also copy it or extract to
c:\windows\system\vmm32. That will take care of the error message, don't
know about the rest.

Check your network settings in the Control Panel - if IPX/SPX or Client for
Netware Networks is loaded and you don't need it, remove it (or them) and
reboot. If you do need them, remove and reinstall them.

I don't think so. NWLINK.VXD is the IPX/SPX network provider, used for some
network games and most often for NetWare network access.
