Symbol Spectrum 24 pcmcia in PCI PC card reader on XP

I'm trying to get a pcmcia wireless lan card to work in my desktop.
The installed PCI PC card adapter (RICOH R5C475II) reads memory cards fine.
When I insert the LA4121 card, the pc locks up tight as a drum. When I eject
the card, the PC returns to normal.
I've read some articles about problems with IRQ assignments, but they aren't
clear on a solution.
