Hi.

Having browsed this NG I'm pretty sure that this is not an uncommon
problem, so I apologise now, but here goes:

I have just got b/band and installed software, modem etc this week.
Setup was a dream.

However, Day 1, connection was ok, speed pretty good, well anything's
better than a 56k modem? Line dropped a few times but I put this down
to not having configured everything correctly.

Day 2, having configured everything the way Tiscali suggest apart from
the advice to 'check the radio button against Never Dial a Connection'
cause guess what if I do that, it does just that, never dials a
connection no matter how hard I try to get it to. Anyway, line started
to drop after 5 min's or so with the odd 20 min connection.

Day 3, line drops whenever it feels like it, 20 sec's, 40 sec's, 30
min's, even drops when I'm not actually connected to anything.

Day 4, today, spends more time off than on.

Have tried all the self help things and I'm sure that it's set up ok.

OOps, line just dropped again!!!

I've swapped all the filters around (3), not connected via an
extention lead, the only thing I haven't done is to connect directly
with the master socket, it's a long way away and I don't have an RJ11
cable that long. I know I could move the PC but to be honest if that's
the only way to get a stable line then I have a major d.i.y problem
getting a cable from where the PC is to the socket!!!!!!!!!

I've spoken to Tiscali. Now I'm sorry to say this but the chap on the
other end of the line could hardly speak English let alone understand
it.

Line just dropped again!

So, question is, what's the most likely cause, the fact that the
socket I'm using is a long way from the master, the BT line- (I should
explain that I'm one of those that BT said were too far away from my
exchange to receive b/band originally, but have since decided that
it's not to far after all), or could it be the modem. I don't think
that its the RJ11 as I've used the original as supplied and a new
extention.

Sorry if I've carried on a bit, but I've waited for years to get
b/band and now I have it, quite honestly--it sucks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ta.

Geoff.

Sorry to say Broadband does not Suck as you say, BUT the ISP you chose SUCKS
Big Time!
Have you tried disconnecting every thing from your phone sockets apart from
your filters and modem, Sometimes digital DECT phones can upset ADSL if you
have one of those.

Get Tiscali to get the line retested, can you borrow a another Modem from a
friend to try ?

maybe you are too far away after all. Take the front off your master
socket Linebox and plug into the test socket behind - does it work OK
then ?

http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/adsl_faceplate.htm

Are you using a modem that tells you the SNR or Attenuation or CRC
errors or other stats - if so post them.

Tiscali should escalate this to BT for an engineer to test the line
and fit a splitter faceplate if you need one.

Could be a faulty extension lead. Have you got a spare to try?

First thing would be get a decent ISP!

Secondly try your connection from the back plate/test socket see what it's
like there, if it's ok then you've got problems with your extensions, if not
get Tiscali (spit) to get a BT engineer to visit.

The silver lining in this cloud is that Tiscali tend to order/provide 2meg
data stream circuits not matter what you've ordered (honest) & that you may
be outside the limits so you will probably be able to change to a decent ISP
with no penalties being incured, just a little bit of patience required
that's all.....

Paul.

Yes, your right, broadband doesn't suck, just frustration coming out!

I tried everything I can think of plus everything that Tiscali
suggested during at least 6 phone calls over the whole of Saturday.

Eventually they checked the line and reported a very bad connection
which they are now passing up the ladder to someone to sort out over
the next 2-3 working days--I hope.

Have to say that so far I'm not too impressed with Tiscali but there
again it could be that frustration.

Thanks for your advice.

Just one question, which ISP would you recommend?

Geoff.

Phil.

Thanks, I'll try the test socket.

With regard to the modem it's a Sagem 800 and only has to indicator
lights, power and ADSL.

I spent all of Saturday trying, with the help of Tiscali to get it
sorted, eventually the tested the line and reported a very bad
connection which they say they will get sorted in the next 2-3 working
days.

Thanks for your response.

Beck.

Yes, I've tried the cable supplied by Tiscali, an extension lead and
an ordinary modem cable, which incidentally worked just as well as the
RJ11 (unless of course they are the same thing?).

Thanks.

Geoff.

Kraftee.

Thanks, I'll try that.

One question, who would you recommend as a decent ISP, as I do have a
feeling that's were it's going to end up.

Many thanks

Geoff.

the stats would be a software function accessed form the PC - RTFM at
http://www.sagem.com/web-modems/down...ide_ppp_en.pdf

section 4.3.2.2 shows what you're after - the statistics tab, that's
for a Mac but I think Alt/P or Alt/D pops up the same thing on a PC.
