Who supplies ADSL modem with Ethernet as standard?

I'm moving house into an area without NTL cable access. In my old
place I had the NTL modem attached to a Netgear wireless router with
Ethernet. All of the ADSL broadband suppliers appear to offer modems
which only have USB out. Can anyone suggest a broadband supplier in
the UK who offers an Ethernet ADSL modem as standard on one of their
home (e.g. not expensive business tariffs) connections?

I'd rather not have to buy another router (with ADSL modem built in) or
have another PC (running Smoothwall or something) between my modem and
wireless router.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Robin

As far as I know, BT Broadband give a BT Voyager 205 router as standard.
It's only 1 x USB + 1 x Ethernet, but you could connect your router to
the ethernet port, as long as you are okay configuring NAT - as you are
in effect double-NATing everything. It's not ideal, but will work. Most
ISPs will give you either a Speedtouch 330 or Voyager 105 USB modem. To
be honest, I'd put your current router on Ebay, and buy yourself a
Netgear DG834G (if you like Netgear...) and go with a decent, uncapped
ISP, like Freedom2Surf or AOL (honestly!).

(sidenote)
Why AOL I hear you ask....? If you set a router up to use with AOL - you
can forget their software, and just use them like any other ISP. The
good thing is though, you can download as much as you like - they don't
have any caps or use any traffic shaping at all! Most major ISPs wil
have some sort of cap imposed on their customers.

I am not aware of anyone doing this. BT ship the Voyager 205 ethernet
router as standard on all but their cheapest accounts but you'll be
paying a price premium that would exceed the cost of buying an
ethernet ADSL modem within a few months. Also it is a router.

You should be able to get an ethernet modem to work with your current
kit, but be aware that not all ethernet modems get on with all routers
on account of most ISPs using PPPoA. D-link 300 and Linksys ADSL2MUE
are modems to consider.

Tiscali - dialup speeds at Broadband prices, see

AOL - the unlimited ISP of choice for heavy downloaders.

I do the same. Less cable mess, and you're sure to find a good deal on the
DG834(G) somewhere.

Fred.
