In the search for a decent and cheap ADSL ISP, here is the story:

I currently have a BT phone line with Option 1 phone service, linksys
adsl wireless gateway and usb wireless interface so i don't need a free
modem and setup offered by most adsl isps I have seen. I would prefer
to have unlimited downloads but say, 10GB a month might be ok. The
main issue is that I will be moving from my current address within
about 2 to 4 months so don't want to be tied into a 12 month contract,
but would like the option of coming back if required as I may move back
to the same address & phone line in the future. I also might need the
option to be able to go back to the same isp but at a different address
& phone number.

I may be asking for the impossible here, but I would like the above for
a maximum of £20 / month, so any ideas who could provide such a
service, or one which comes close to requirements and costs.

Thanks

start with a contradiction.

you don't need a free setup ? fine, pay the £58.75 inc VAT. Gives you
more flexibility. If you have an ADSL service now you could migrate
and save that anyway.

Zen, Metronet, Plusnet or F2S can do monthly contract, you pay the
setup fee.

You'll just start again and pay the setup fee.

http://www.f2s.net/adsl/homeuser.php is £50 setup and £20/month with
10 GB on monthly contract.

Metronet would charge £70 setup and £18.75 per month for 10G on their
PayGo2000 http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/paygo

both of these have payments for extra data over 10G.

Plusnet Broadband Plus for £14.99 has various restrictions but not a
volume cap or payment. £70.50 setup cost.
http://www.plus.net/residential/broadband/

Zen has a "home mover" option which would save setup fees on moving,
but are out of your monthly price range.
http://www.zenadsl.co.uk/ADSL.aspx?page=380
worth considering the total cost over the long run.

Freedom2Surf offer exactly what you are looking for - Supply your own
modem, no 12 month contract and a 10 GB cap for £20. Even better, you
get the fastest possible speed available to you for this price - up to
8Mb/s if you are in their LLU area. For most of us though, we need to
make do with 2Mb/s. I use their £25 uncapped package, and it's great!

pricey thier service makes it worthwhile

Metronet has a 3 month minimum term. (

As does Plus.Net (with a small admin fee of about 6 quid) but that's on
the basis that the activation fee is repaid in full (50 +VAT) if user
then decides to cancel within 12 months, and that fee drop at 20%/year.

Depends on his definition of cheap, I guess. £20pcm is no longer
cheap and brings most decent brands into contention.

Yes, interesting he does not seem to have an ADSL service, yet does
own the equipment. I am assuming it was just forward planning
otherwise migration would certainly be a much cheaper option.

Unless, of course, he is migrating. Metronet was 3 months but I have
a feeling they might have reduced that now.

BT now have a simultaneous provision system (which doesn't work very
well) but which, IIRC, does not require the setup fee to be repaid
because it is essentially a continuation of the service from your
previous property. Details are sketchy on that so I may be wrong.

Which Metronet will enforce but Freedom2Surf currently don't. Metronet
also don't offer payment by DD whereas Freedom2Surf do. I have a
service from both. Both are excellent but Freedom2Surf have more
bells and whistles, whilst Metronet are slightly easier to talk to,
should you require it.

The ultimate in goalpost movers.

Not relevant if the home mover / simultaneous provision option I've
mentioned is correct. But Zen still do have an extremely good
reputation. Would I pay the extra for Zen? No, because F2s and
Metronet have provided a pretty much perfect service in the time I've
been with them. It's been rock solid and full speed ever since I
started so I fail to see how paying any extra would have helped.

panto time I suspect :-)

"Only 1 month min. contract" from http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/paygo
(a recent change, to be fair)

Zen do however implement that, not all ISPs do (yet)

There is "simultaneous provision" (new supply) and "broadband mover"
(move location and take ADSL with you).
