Suggestions needed for failing client mapped drives across VPN tunnel

Windows 2003 Domain, Single Forest, main office and one branch office
connected over the Internet via VPN using Cisco equipment and Internet
access is Partial T1 at both locations.

Main office has one Windows 2003 Server PDC; Branch Office has one
Windows 2003 Server BDC and is bridgehead server for the Branch Office
subnet.

All clients to remote server mapped drive attempts fail, however all
server-to-server mapped drives work just fine. Attempts to change the
MTU on the client side to as low as 1200 have not seemed to fix.

Are we missing something here?

On each Client PC, would adding static route to the other subnet PDC
or BDC help?

Any suggestions you may have would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you in advanced.

Can the client ping the remote server by IP? If yes, can you ping it by
name?

Actually the client can ping the DNS name and ping the ip address as
well.

In addition, the client does see the server name in the "My Network
Places", but when they attempt to doubleclick on the server, they get
a time out.

Again, the PDC & BDC servers don't have this issue at all.

Thanks,

Please post an unedited & clearly labeled ipconfig /all from a problem
workstation & the DC in the remote subnet. (& note that there's no PDC/BDC
in AD)....and also let us know what happens when you run a net use command
to map a drive.

Sounds like master browser issue. Do you have WINS server? Or this search
result may help.

Hi Bob,

Yes we do have a WINS server installed on the DC as well.

You maybe right here as well, we are seeing a master browser election
on the Domain.

We have a Laptop that is forcing a browser election on the domain.
The laptop has been joined to the domain, it has XP Pro, Norton
Internet Security 2007, some kids' games, and a couple foreign
language (Korean) apps installed.

On the Main Office DC, we changed the registry so that the server is
the Domain Master Browser even after server reboots.

Any suggestions with a problematic Windows XP Client?

Also of note:

On both DC's at the Main Office and Branch, we ran netdiag and dcdiag,
and the results came back with no errors.

Thanks,

bertcastrosf

You may want to use browstat.exe to check the status of the XP.

Hi Bob,

I'll go ahead and try the browstat.

Also, what do you think about Disabling the Master Browser on the
Laptop.

Would this be a good thing or not?

Thanks.
