Suggestions...and P2P filtering

Hi to all... I'm new here...

I've just moved into the Uk, and I'm going to be connected to the
broadband.
Any suggestion about the company?
As I'm looking for an unlimited connection with -let's say- 2mb of
band, I've see that both AOL and Tiscali offers are interesting... AOL
gives you for free a WI Fi router, and that is more than interesting..

However I would like to know if AOL has P2P filters. Or, in general, if
the broad band internet supplier in the UK are P2P filtered!
For example I'm sure that Tiscali is not...

Thanks in advance for your kind reply,

Cheers

Mario

As you have just moved to the UK (Welcome by the way) The biggest thing to
remember with broadband is there is NO such thing as unlimited.
You will always find a Fair Use Policy, I am not saying this is a bad thing
just don't get caught out if you like to download gig's of stuff.

As for suppliers, Try looking here http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ in the
forums.

All ISPs have some sort of traffic shaping to varying degrees, weather
they admit it or not.

AOL are about to introduce a fair use policy. Tiscali already have one I
read somewhere.

included in the price, rather than free :-)

Do you want a router costing £20 off Ebay (£50 new) to determine your choice
of service provider ?

You're obviously susceptible to advertising from the above, but there is an
unfortunate inverse relationship between advertising budget and service
quality. Avoid Tiscali if you can, one of their many faults is the use of
harsh throttling if you go over the 2GB FUP.

Watch out for contract lengths, most of the "free this and that" offers tie
you to a 12 month contract, which can be expensive if it turns out to be
rubbish and you want to leave.

I use Tiscali and they do not limit P2P or filter it. They do not allow you
to run it or do massive downloads between 6pm and 11pm, any other time you
can do what you like. for £17-99 a month I get the 8Mbit connection. I
regularly download at 700K/s.
They had a problem with the news server and email twice in 18 months, apart
from that I have no complaints.

I'm not sure which package you have been looking at! I regularly download
DVDs each month. No problem.

Which ever ISP you end up with, you might want to enable outgoing
protocol encryption if you use bittorrent - it can help speed things up.

Don't be too surprised if someone pops up with a 'we don't do that' post!

I'm currently seeing NNTP traffic appearing to be halted during peak
times. I'm told it's a side effect of overall network congestion, rather
than any formal control, which seems consistent with my observations, as
there seems to be some variation in timing of the problem.

Things seem to have worsened since Christmas.

So I don't feel I can recommend Tiscali, but I wouldn't tell you to
ignore them as a possible supplier.

Thank you for all the informations...

Actually in Italy is pretty different...
All the broadband connections are unlimited but slighty more
expensive.. And we do not have a policy of fair use.
It is known by experience that some companies "filters" all the p2p
traffic in such a way you are not able to download anything at any
time...
Another difference is that you can have have a broadband connection
without any telephone line from Telecom (that is the italian equvalent
of BT)..

Thanks to all,

Bests,
Mario
