We have 802.11b running in the house -
Our Toshiba laptops seem to drain battery sitting OFF
and are always dead after being charged
and then sitting on the floor in the family room.
And no, they are not in Standby or Hybernation.

Therefore, we are looking over on eBay
for a used laptop to use surfing while in the family room,
and it should have a CDrom or DVD
along with PCMCIA for our wireless cards vs a the built-in wifi -

Suggestions for surfing laptops with LONG battery life,
and a no drain while sitting in the OFF mode -

Phil -

Hi,

I did exactly what you are describing last with my three year old Compaq
Presario 17xl262 (PIII 600 mhz/512mb RAM) with a D-Link 650+ card and used
30% of my battery over an hour and 15 minutes (I had 70% battery remaining
when I shut down). The battery is about 18 months old (I bought a store demo
and the original battery was junk from the start. I bought an original
Compaq replacement and have been really impressed/pleased with the charege).
Leaving it sitting in OFF mode, or in Hibernate (which I tend to use most of
the time) does not seem to trickle drain the battery significantly.

I've seen similar laptops quite cheap on E-Bay. Love mine!

Hope this helps,

Mike

My Sony VAIO PCG-5416 (P3) was unused for four months when I retired
and moved house. When I came to use it the battery still showed 100%
full.

The standard battery gives me more than 3 hours use (not using the
CD-ROM or floppy) and the "spare" long-life battery over 5 hours use.

Nice machine that's given me a lot of very good use. Now I use it in my
garden and/or conservatory hooked up using wireless..

slot...

Phil,

Just a suggestion that may help until you buy some new equipment. I had
a couple of Toshibas that seemed to lose a lot of charge while in the
off position (seemed to be a known issue on the libretto mailing list),
but they lost virually no charge while hibernated (about 1 percent a
month). Give it a try.

Joe

What's your price range?
Can you afford a Centrino?

Thanks.

I'd consider an extra power supply.
IME, the cord isn't a big issue.
