BoBrown: After 2 hours on the phone with linksys support
and countless hours trying to figure out the solution
myself, I was finally able to restore internet access
through my router on my Windows 98 computer.
Try the following in this order:
1. Do a find files or folders search for "hosts". Rename
the Hosts file (NOT the SAM file) to "Hosts.old".
Restart the computer. Try to access a website.
2. If that didn't work, download the latest version of
Internet Explorer to the computer on the network that
still has internet access, move the setup file to a
shared folder on the Windows 98 machine, and install the
latest version of Internet Explorer on the 98 machine,
then make sure under Tools->Options->Connections->LAN
that no boxes are checked. Restart and try to access a
website.
3. Recover Windows 98 using the recovery cd. Select
Recover (which does not overwrite or erase the files on
the hard drive) instead of Reformat. Restart and try to
access a website.
I actually did all three and one of them solved the
problem, not sure which.
Goodluck,
Brian
