I sometimes use a Win98 machine with an Edimax/Raylink wireless card.
The link status is shown by an icon in the system tray, and I can click
on that to turn off the RF connection. The setting is remembered so the
link is not automatically established when the computer is booted.

Ah, but is that not part of the software that came with the
wireless adaptor? I have the same type of icon with my wireless
adaptor, which works when using wireless.

This is not standard Win98 software. As the OP is not using
wireless, he will not have this available.

Best regards,
Peter.

Yes, it's a feature of the Ralink software, not Win98.

My point was that if the OP really wants the option to switch off his
Internet connection, he might find it easier using a wireless card,
rather than pulling out the Ethernet lead. The assumption being that
his router most probably has a wireless facility.

I initially tried using a USB wireless adapter with the old Win98 box
but the performance was poor and there was no option to turn off the
connection. The Edimax/Ralink PCI card is much better.
