Just wanted to throw out the fodder for searches in case anyone has
trouble. I have an iBook with an original Airport (not extreme) card
that I managed to get working under OSX Panther 10.3.1 and 128-bit
WEP using a shared key (sadly this 802.11b card doesn't have WPA
drivers yet, and this access point doesn't support WPA).
Firmware in the Linksys BEFW11S4 version 4 is listed on the Linksys
Status web page as "1.45.3, Jul 1 2003" (odd though, since I'd just
loaded it with the code.bin from the version 1.50 December 2003
firmware from the web site).
The big tip: If you are using a 3rd party access point with WEP
enabled, there's a very helpful Apple support article that says if you
are typing in a shared WEP key for a 3rd party access point, you need
to preceed a hex key with a $ in the "password" prompt that OSX gives
you (And if you use and ASCII key, you have to enclose it in quotes).

I also enabled SSID broadcasts at least temporarily...but I'm not sure
if that was the key to getting it working or not. Probably it was the
$ in the WEP key that was the silver bullet.
Best Regards,
