Substitute for Streams Environment

Hi -

I am stuck with a very old application, IFPS by Conshare, running on NT 4
Server. I need to move this app to Windows 2003 (or 2000) to be able to
retire the NT 4 Server. I couldn't get the service for the app to start, and
as it turns out it needs the Streams Environment protocol to run under NT4.

Is there an equivalent to Steams available to newer Windows operating
systems? I can't get help from Comshare, since they no longer exist.

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

Please note that this newsgroup is focused on Windows Server network
issues. Regarding your query, it is related to third party software. For
third party issues, please consider other related channel, as we lack
resources on this software.

Thanks & Regards,

Mike Luo

You could load Virtual Server on the 2003 box (it's free from MS). Then run
a copy of NT4 inside Virtual Server as a virtual machine, then run IFPS on
the copy of NT4.

It will behave as if you have two OS's running on the same hardware at the
same time, but it will not bother anything on the 2003 OS and you can do
whatever else you want to do on the 2003 at the same time.

Hi -

Yes, we do have VMWare in our data center as an alternative, which is what
we are guessing we are going to have to use. We would like to get rid of NT4
altogether since it's not supported and because our Security people consider
it a risk. I think that if it's used as a server dedicated to this app and
if it's behind a well configured firewall, it would be fine.

By the way, I have been testing it on an NT4 VM in VS R2. :-)

Thanks.

Hi -

With all due respect, this is a MS server networking issue. It's about a
specific protocol that was included in NT4, but not in later versions. It
just happens to be a 3rd party app that depends on the protocol. I didn't
ask for help with the specific app, just with the network protocol part.

Regards.

Sounds like the way to go to me. I'm sure someday that App will be replaced
with something better and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Hello,

Based on my research, Streams Environment can be installed into Windows
2000 Server, later versions of Windows will not support the Streams
environment. If you want to run the Application on Windows Server 2003, you
should upgrade the program.

To add the Streams environment, follow these steps:
1. Open the %SystemRoot% folder in Windows Explorer.
2. On the Tool menu, click Folder Options .
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advances Settings box, click Show hidden files and folders.
5. Click OK .
6. Edit the %SystemRoot%\Inf\Netstrm.inf file by using any text editor
(such as Notepad).

In the [ControlFlags] section, place a semicolon ( at the beginning of
the following line:
ExcludeFromSelect = MS_Streams
In the [Streams.ndi] section, change this line
Characteristics = 0x28 ; NCF_NOT_USER_REMOVABLE | NCF_HIDDEN
to this:
Characteristics = 0x00 ; NCF_USER_REMOVABLE
7. Save and close the Netstrm.inf file.
8. Right-click My Network Places on the desktop, and then click Properties

Thanks much! I will try that. If it works under Windows 2000, that would be
very helpful.

Cheers.
