Stupid Wireless Access Point Question

Hi;

Currently have very small network in home - 3 pcs & a pda. The server pc has
the internet connection + a wireless and wired network card and a modem -
its routing between the wireless interface and the wired interface and
shares the Internet connection via NAT to the wired and wireless networks.

I have a notebook with a wlan card and another pc with the wired card and
they both connected directly to the server pc (I have no hubs/switches). The
wlan card in the notebook is a CF in a PCMCIA adapter and I use it with the
pda also.

This whole setup works quite nicely but I feel could do with adding a
wireless access point to repeat the signal - so what I want to know is -
what can I buy that plugs into a wall power source that sits there on its
own that will act as an "access point" I don`t want or need to to connect to
the wired network physically.

Also do wireless access points need ip addresses ?

An access point can't do this. There are wireless "repeaters", but I
know of none that are designed to work with an ad-hoc network such as
the one you describe.

Better to buy an AP or wireless router and use it as it was designed to
be used, IMHO.

Nope.
